In another break from its tradition and a further step into the mainstream of motorcycle design, BMW has introduced an all-new 900cc vertical twin, which will debut at the Milan Show in November. Developed in cooperation with Rotax and manufactured in that company's Austrian facility, the eight-valve engine uses a stout 12:1 compression ratio to make a claimed 80 horsepower. A counterbalancing scheme keeps it smooth. It has a six-speed gearbox and belt final drive. Standard BMW features such as catalyzed exhaust and optional anti-lock brakes are included on the 441 (claimed wet) bike.
