2010 BMW R Review


BMW Motorrad’s naming conventions can get confusing, as they use a different system of naming than any other motorcycle manufacturer currently in production today. The BMW R series represents BMW motorcycles that use a twin-cylinder boxer engine. This engine is used on the R1200GS (an off-road adventure bike), the R1200R (a naked roadster), and the R1200RT (a touring bike). The 2010 BMW R series received a few updates on their boxer engines, which benefit all the different models.

One advantage of boxer engines is that they have a natUral dynamic balance. BMW updated their twin-cylinder boxers in 2010. The main updates include using radial four-valve heads, a combustion chamber with larger diameter valves, and new cast-aluminum pistons. These minor changes result in increased performance, and smoother power delivery for all 2010 R series bikes.

The engines on the 2010 BMW R series are all 1,170cc twin-cylinder boxer engines. With the 2010 updates, the R series boxer two-stroke engine now produces 103 horsepower with 85 ft. lbs. of torque at 6,000rpm. Tuned to provide low -end torque and steady horsepower at all rpms, these engines are great heirs to BMW’s boxer engine tradition. Each bike in the R series has the distinct exhaust note of BMW’s boxer engines. The BMW R series also uses a shaft drive to transmit the power from the engine to wheels. All of the R series models use a 6-speed manual transmission for shifting. BMW Motorrad’s proprietary suspension provides the Telelever front wheel suspension, and Paralever suspension on the rear for all R series models.

The BMW R 1200GS competes in the adventure bike market. Some bikes advertised as adventure bikes are not full-fledged enduro bikes. The R1200GS has off-road inspired styling, but also qualifies as an enduro capable motorcycle. It’s not a specialized dirt bike, but it is designed to handle off-road conditions, in addition to riding comfortably on city streets. With appeal to both riders who live in areas where dirt or gravel roads are common, and riders who live in the city but want a bike to take on a weekend getaway to the mountains, the 2010 BMW R1200GS can handle these varying conditions. An Enduro-specced 19 inch front wheel, with a wider 17 inch wheel on the rear, make sure the R1200GS can handle off-road conditions.

Riders who want a boxer engine to power them on long road trips should consider the R1200 RT. Designed as a sport touring bike, the R1200 RT comes equipped with saddlebags, large windshield, and appropriately styled bodywork. The R1200 RT uses wheel and tire sizes suited to sports touring: 120/70 ZR 17 inch in front, with a 180/55 ZR 17 in the rear. Combined with the R1200 RT’s lighter weight than other bikes in its class, the R1200 RT achieves excellent handling for a touring bike. BMW also offers add-ons for the R1200 RT that will make long roads more enjoyable. The 2010 R1200 RT can be ordered with an interface for an MP3 player or iPod. The adjustable seat and handlebars situate the rider comfortably for long rides.

If you want a naked roadster with a boxer engine, the BMW R1200 R is one of the best options available. The exterior styling and equipment add-ons are mostly what set the naked roadster boxers apart from their enduro and touring siblings, as they share the same engine and suspension. BMW offers two different versions of the boxer engine equipped naked roadster: the basic R1200 R, and an R1200 R Classic. The differences here are mostly aesthetic, with the basic R1200 R coming with a cast alloy wheels, while the BMW R Classic uses wire spoke wheels for a retro look. The two versions also use different paint schemes, and both versions incorporate a redesigned cockpit with analog instruments.
