2009 Hyosung Sense Review

The 2009 Hyosung Sense was one of the mid-level scooters from South Korean manufacturer Hyosung Corporation via its S&T; Motors division. It is officially called the ""2009 Hyosung Sense SD50."" It had a manufacturer's suggested retail price, or MSRP, of $1,599.

Available as a red or silver scooter, the 2009 Hyosung Sense’s suffix is partly inspired by its engine displacement, which is measured at 49 cubic centimeters. (It is rounded up to 50.) The engine that powers the 2009 Sense is a two-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder that pumps out 3.5 horsepower at 7,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 2.8 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 RPM. It uses a reed intake valve train, and has a bore and stroke of 1.61 x 1.47 inches (41 x 37.4 millimeters) and 7.2-to-1 compression ratio. Fueling the engine is a 14-inch Mikuni carburetor. Hyosung provides an electric and kick starter on the scooter for ignition.

Each 2009 Hyosung Sense engine is hooked up with a Continuously Variable Transmission, which is also known as CVT. It helps with more effective engine operation – and consequently, greater fuel efficiency – by choosing from an infinite number of gear ratios. Each 2009 Sense gets a fuel tank that can hold up to 1.3 gallons (4.8 liters).

For braking power, the 2009 Hyosung Sense uses a front-disc-brake rear-drum-brake format. The suspension on the scooter comprises a telescopic fork at the front and a single-sided swing arm with a shock absorber at the back. Each 2009 Sense uses 12-inch wheels.

The 2009 Hyosung Sense uses a solid steel frame; and it is dressed up with front and rear fenders, exhaust guard and lower fairing. The scooter can be parked using its center stand. A two-piece vinyl seat provides enough space for the driver and one passenger. Standard digital instrumentation on the 2009 Sense consists of a speedometer and fuel level warning gauge.

Storage space on the 2009 Hyosung Sense consists of a rear rack, under-seat and lockable compartments, and a space for hanging a helmet. A halogen headlight and a pair of side mirrors are provided for enhancing visual perception during driving.

Each 2009 Hyosung Sense has a length of 72.4 inches (1,837.9 mm), width of 25 inches (635 mm), height of 43.7 inches (1,110 mm) and wheelbase of 50.6 inches (1,285.2 mm). The ground clearance and seat height of the 2009 Sense are measured at 5.5 inches (139.7 mm) and 29 inches (736.6 mm), respectively. Its dry weight is estimated at 194 lbs. (88 kilograms).

With decent engine power, braking, handling and storage space, the 2009 Hyosung Sense is worth considering. For customers torn between the 2009 Sense and its model-year counterpart in the Hyosung Rally – which has a MSRP that is $300 higher – there's not much of a difference between the two, as they share virtually all specifications.
