2008 Triumph Speedmaster Review

The 2008 Triumph Speedmaster came just a year after its British manufacturer Triumph Motorcycle made more major updates to the cruiser than all the previous model years combined. Available as a lone model, the 2008 Speedmaster had a manufacturer""s suggested retail price of $8,299.

The 2008 Triumph Speedmaster carries over the changes made on the 2007 model. This includes restyled chain cover, pillion footrest hanger, slash cut silencers, and upper fork shrouds. Also, the 2008 Speedmaster uses the newly designed front 18-inch and rear 15-inch aluminum wheels, which are both wrapped in tubeless tires. The 2008 Speedmaster received the 2007 engine: a four-stroke air-cooled parallel-twin (two-cylinder) unit that by then had an 865-cubic centimeter displacement, 61 horsepower and 44.3 lb-ft of torque. Surprisingly, though, the fuel injection that Triumph switched to in 2007 is replaced in favor of two carburetors.

The engine on the 2008 Triumph Speedmaster has a bore and stroke of 3.55 by 2.68 inches (90 by 68 millimeters), and its compression ratio is 9.2 to 1. Using a double overhead camshaft configuration, each of the two cylinders of the engine has four intake valves for a total of eight. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission, and each cruiser gets a 4.4-gallon (16.6-liter) gas tank.

The 2008 Triumph Speedmaster has three color schemes, which are Phantom Black, Phantom Black/Tornado Red and Pacific Blue/Aluminum Silver. It relies on an aluminum frame to keep it relatively lightweight for a cruiser while retaining its sturdiness. Standard digital instrumentation consists of a tachometer, trip odometer and speedometer. Unlike a lot of cruisers, the 2008 Speedmaster provides enough seating for two people. Also included on each bike are halogen lighting and a pair of rearview mirrors for enhanced visual perception when driving, and under-seat and lockable compartments for storage.

For braking, the 2008 Triumph Speedmaster has all-wheel disc brakes that consist of a 12.2-inch (310-mm) dual disc at the front and an 11.2-inch (285-mm) single disc at the back. The 2008 Speedmaster’s suspension consists of a 1.6-inch (41-mm) telescopic fork at the front and a steel twin-sided swing arm with two shock absorbers at the back.

The 2008 Triumph Speedmaster measures at 95.3 inches (2,420.6 mm) in length, 32.7 inches (830.6 mm) in width and 45.7 inches (1,160.8 mm) in height. The wheelbase is measured at 65.2 inches (1,656.1 mm), and the seat is set at a height of 28.3 inches (718.8 mm). The dry weight for each 2008 Triumph Speedmaster is 504 lbs. (228.6 kilograms).

The change from fuel injection to the inferior carburetor fueling method is particularly inexplicable. However, considering that Triumph made some major updates on the immediate preceding model, the 2008 Triumph Speedmaster is all the better for it.

New For 2008

  • Carburetors replace the fuel injection method; Pacific Blue/Aluminum Silver color scheme introduced; discontinuation of the Mulberry Red and Phantom Black/Sunset Red color schemes.
