2008 SYM Mio Review

In 2008, Taiwan-based scooter (and motorcycle) manufacturer SYM Sanyang Industry Co., Ltd. (SYM Motors) released the lone model for the SYM Mio, one of its mid-level scooters. Officially known as the 2008 SYM Mio 50, the scooter had an MSRP (Manufacturer""s Suggested Retail Price) of $2,268.

The ""50"" suffix for the 2008 SYM Mio comes from its engine displacement, which SYM Motors gives as 49.5 cubic centimeters (cc) rounded up to 50 cc. The engine on the scooter is a four-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder unit that pumps out 3.75 horsepower at 8,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 2.15 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 RPM. The engine""s bore and stroke is measured at 1.46 x 1.81 inches (37 x 46 millimeters), and it has a compression ratio of 12.6 to 1. Two intake valves are placed on the engine""s cylinder, and the entire unit depends on fueling from a carburetor.

Each engine on the 2008 SYM Mio is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission, a type of automatic gearbox that improves engine efficiency by choosing from an unlimited number of effective gear ratios. Going on each 2008 SYM Mio is a 1.3-gallon (4.8-liter) gas tank.

For its stopping power, the 2008 SYM Mio relies on a 6.3-inch (180-mm) dual disc brake at the front; and a smaller, 3.7-inch (95-mm) drum brake at the back. Its suspension comprises a telescopic fork at the front and twin-sided swing arm with shock absorber at the back. Each 2008 SYM Mio rides on ten-inch aluminum wheels fitted with tubed tires.

The 2008 SYM Mio uses a steel frame for sturdiness, with other parts including front and rear fenders, fork guards, belt guard and exhaust guard. The 2008 Mio comes in a Coffee/White, Orange/White or White finish. The one-piece vinyl seat on the scooter is big enough for two people; and storage consists of under-seat and lockable compartments, as well as helmet accommodation. The digital instrumentation consists of a speedometer, fuel level warning gauge and service reminder indicator. Also included are side mirrors and halogen lighting.

Each 2008 SYM Mio has a length of 67.7 inches (1,719.1 mm), width of 28.3 inches (720 mm), height of 42.9 inches (1,090 mm) and wheelbase of 46.5 inches (1,180 mm). With a dry weight of 186.3 lbs. (84 kilograms) and payload capacity of 242.5 lbs. (110 kg), the 2008 SYM Rio has a gross vehicle weight rating of 418.9 lbs. (190 kg).

Those looking for a better braking and more powerful SYM scooter of the 2008 model year might be better off looking at other entries in SYM Motors"" line-up. However, the 2008 SYM Rio is a generally decent scooter, especially when it concerns storage space.
