2008 SYM HD Review

For the 2008 model year, Taiwan-based SYM Sanyang Industry Co., Ltd. made available two models of its mid-level SYM HD scooter: the HD 125 and HD 200. The manufacturer""s suggested retail prices are $3,298 for the HD 125 and $3,798 for the HD 200.

The two models of the 2008 SYM HD have three-digit suffixes that stand for their respective engine displacements. The engine on the HD 125 displaces at 124.5 cubic centimeters (rounded up to 125 cc), while the one on the HD 200 displaces at 171.2 cc (rounded up to 200 cc).

The engine on the 2008 SYM HD is a four-stroke liquid-cooled single-cylinder unit with four intake valves. The one on the HD 125 generates 12.3 horsepower at 8,500 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 8 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 RPM. The engine on the HD 200 is more powerful, pumping out 16 horsepower at 8,000 RPM and 11.3 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 RPM.

For optimal operation and improved fuel economy, the engine on the 2008 SYM HD is connected with a Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT. A carburetor fuels the engine, which can be ignited using an electric or kick starter. Each 2008 HD scooter has a fuel tank that can hold up to 2.1 gallons (8 liters).

Each 2008 SYM HD has an 8.7-inch (220-millimeter) hydraulic disc brake at the front and a 5.1-inch (130-mm) drum brake at the back for its stopping power. A telescopic fork and twin-sided swing arm with rear shock absorber comprise the scooter""s suspension. Each 2008 HD rides on 16-inch aluminum wheels, which are fitted with tubed tires.

Available as a blue or red scooter and with a two-occupant seat, the 2008 SYM HD is made of steel and is covered in plastic. Covering bits include front and rear fenders, exhaust and belt guards, and fork guards. Standard digital instrumentation on the scooter includes a clock, speedometer, service reminder indicator, and temperature and fuel level warning gauge. The 2008 SYM HD also has a rear rack, under-seat storage, halogen headlight and a pair of rearview mirrors.

The 2008 SYM HD has a length of 81.4 inches (2,066.5 mm), width of 27.8 inches (706 mm), height of 45.9 inches (1,165 mm) and wheelbase of 54.5 inches (1,385 mm). The dry weight of the scooter is 297.6 lbs. (135 kilograms), and it can carry up to 242.5 lbs. (110 kg).

With a considerable amount of engine power, proper handling and storage space, the 2008 SYM HD is a better-than-average scooter. It might be best suited for more casual riders or delivery-based businesses.
