2008 Hyosung Prima Review

S&T; Motors Co. Ltd., the motorcycle manufacturing subsidiary of South Korean conglomerate Hyosung Corp., introduced the Prima scooter in 2007. For the next model year (2008), the Prima received no changes: retaining the same lone model, main features, and a manufacturer""s suggested retail price of $1,599.

The 2008 Hyosung Prima is officially referred to as the Hyosung Prima SF50, with the prefix representing its engine displacement, at 49 cubic centimeters (rounded up to 50). The engine powering the ""08 Prima is a two-stroke air-cooled single cylinder, with a reed valve train. The bore & stroke and compression ratio of the engine are 1.61 by 1.47 inches (41 by 37.4 millimeters) and 7.4 to 1, respectively.

Fueled by a 14-mm carburetor, the engine on the 2008 Hyosung Prima is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). A type of automatic gearbox, the CVT increases the efficiency of the engine, thus improving the scooter""s fuel economy. Each 2008 Prima comes with a fuel tank that can hold up to 1.3 gallons (4.8 liters).

For braking, the 2008 Hyosung Prima uses a front disc brake and a rear drum brake. While this layout is inferior to all-wheel disc brakes in stopping power, it is a better set-up than drum brakes on both wheels. The wheels on each 2008 Prima are 12 inches and made of steel. For its suspension, the 2008 Prima has a telescopic fork at the front and a single-sided swing arm with shock absorber at the back.

Hyosung uses steel for the frame of the 2008 Prima, which give it a solid feel. The scooter is furnished with fork guards, exhaust guard, front and rear fenders, and lower fairing, with a center stand for parking it. Three color schemes are available for the 2008 Prima: Blue, Mango Yellow, and Red.

On each 2008 Hyosung Prima is a one-piece vinyl seat that provides seating for the driver and a passenger. A speedometer and fuel level warning gauge comprises the scooter""s digital instrumentation. Also included are helmet, under-seat and lockable storage; and halogen headlight and rearview mirrors for enhanced visibility.

Each 2008 Hyosung Prima has a length of 71.9 inches (1,825.8 mm), width of 25 inches (635 mm), height of 43.7 inches (1,110 mm) and wheelbase of 59.6 inches (1,513.8 mm). The ground clearance and seat height of the scooter are measured at 4.9 inches (125 mm) and 29.2 inches (740 mm), respectively. The dry weight of the 2008 Prima is 209.4 lbs. (95 kilograms).

Granted, there are scooters out there – particularly of the 2008 model year – that are lighter, more powerful, have greater driving range and possess greater braking power and handling. However, considering the relatively low price, the 2008 Hyosung Prima does just fine at all the aforementioned categories.
