2008 BMW R Review


BMW Motorrad, a division of BMW that is based in Berlin, Germany, has been making motorcycles since 1923. In 2008, the BMW R lineup included the R1200 Sport, R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 R, R 1200 RT, R 1200 S, and R 1200 ST. All have twin-cylinder boxer engines and run at 1170cc. The motorcycles are similar in looks, but come in different colors and gas-tank sizes. Some are carryovers from BMW's 2007 model year. The R 1200 GS Adventure is an Enduro that is geared to riders who want to do long-distance globetrotting under extreme conditions, such as in areas where roads may be iffy if they even exist at all. The GS Adventure has been especially designed to take everything a road and rider can throw at it. It has a larger gas tank because riders will likely need to go farther between fill-ups. Just ask actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman about the Adventure. They rode the 2007 model in their odyssey, Long Way Down, in which they rode from Scotland to South Africa. The GS and its sibling, the Adventure, are among the German manufacturer's best-selling motorcycles.

Many riders give the W 1200 RT five stars, saying it’s the best all-around touring bike for this weight class. It handles well and gets good gas mileage. They note police drive this model for a reason. The R 1200 R’s instrument panel includes a clock, fuel level warning light, speedometer, tachometer, and odometer. The R 1200 R comes with numerous accessories; however, many of them need to be factory installed, which means riders just can’t walk into a dealership and drive home their new bikes that day if they want some of these accessories. Accessories that must be factory-installed include an anti-theft alarm, automatic stability control (ASC), a chrome exhaust pipe, heated hand grips, an on-board computer, and a sport windshield.
