2005 Ducati SportClassic Review

For the 2005 model year, Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati had three models to offer from the SportClassic sport bike template: the base-level GT1000, the upper-level Sport1000, and the limited-edition Paul Smart 1000LE. Ducati gave them manufacturer’s suggested retail prices of $9,995, $10,995, and $13,995, respectively.

The number ""1000"" comes from the approximation of the 2005 SportClassic’s engine displacement, which is 992 cubic centimeters. The engine itself is a four-stroke, air-cooled, L-twin (two cylinder) Desmodromic unit, with four intake valves, a bore and stroke of 3.7 by 2.82 inches (94 x 71.5 millimeters), and compression ratio of 10 to 1. Moreover, it uses Marelli fuel injection and is ignited with the bike’s electric starter.

The engine on the GT1000 generates 84 horsepower at 8,000 revolutions per minute and 62 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque at 6,000 RPM. The engine on the other models is more powerful, with 92 horsepower and 67.3 lb-ft of torque. Each 2005 SportClassic engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Peak fuel capacity is set at 3.9 gallons (15 liters), with a one-gallon (3.5-liter) reserve.

Braking on the 2005 Ducati SportClassic comes from its Brembo® disc brakes, which consist of a 12.6-inch (320-mm) dual at the front and a 9.7-inch (245-mm) single at the back. The suspension consists of a 1.7-inch (43-mm) inverted fork and a twin-sided steel swing arm. Each 2005 SportClassic rides on 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Composed of a steel frame, the 2005 Ducati SportClassic is a naked bike – it only has a chain guard and fenders over its frame. However, the Paul Smart 1000LE has an upper fairing to classify it as a half-fairing bike. Seating on the 2005 SportClassic can accommodate the driver and one passenger on the GT1000 model; the other variants only have room for the driver.

Standard digital instrumentation on the 2005 Ducati SportClassic includes a clock, tachometer, trip odometer, speedometer, and fuel level warning light. Also included are an engine immobilizer for deterring theft, and halogen lights and rearview mirrors for heightened visibility on the road. Ducati added a tinted windshield on the Paul Smart 1000LE model.

The models of the 2005 Ducati SportClassic share the same wheelbase and seat height, at 56.1 inches (1,424.9 mm) and 32.5 (825 mm), respectively. However, the GT1000 is the heaviest of the three variants, with a dry weight of 403 lbs. (183 kilograms). It is followed by the Paul Smart 1000LE, at 398 lbs. (181 kg), and the Sport1000, at 394 lbs. (179 kg).

Offering terrific engine power, stopping prowess, and handling, the 2005 Ducati SportClassic is a better-than-average sport bike. Go for the Paul Smart 1000LE model for the best the SportClassic can offer, provided that you can find one still available on the market.
