AGV K4 Evo Helmet

AGV is best known for supplying helmets to world championship racers, but along with $800 race replicas the Italian company also offers lids for those with thinner wallets. The K4 Evo represents an evolution of the K4 helmet sold in Europe, and has been thoroughly updated for the American market. It’s got a new, removable liner, revised venting and is now nearly 100 grams lighter in weight. Two shells accommodate sizes XS through XXL, made from fiberglass rather than the polycarbonate plastic typically found at this price point.

We found the K4 Evo comfortable even on long days, but sadly some of the standard features fall short. For example, even with all of the vents open, it can get stuffy inside. And on colder days it’s difficult to keep the “anti-fog” shield from fogging, despite the maker’s claims. On the plus side, when it comes to changing shields, AGV uses a simple, foolproof design.

The look and feel of the K4 Evo are no less praiseworthy. From the snaps and buttons in the interior, through the standard wind deflector under the chin bar, to the glossy finish and sharp graphics, this feels like a quality piece. It also walks the walk, meeting both DOT and ECE safety standards. There’s no question that the K4 Evo is a quality helmet at a reasonable price, but we think the folks at AGV can do better. And they do: You just have to pay for it.
