2009 Piaggio MP3 Review

The 2009 Piaggio is a scooter of the 2009 model year from Italian automaker Piaggio, distinctive for its three wheels: two small ones in the front and one in the back. Thus the bike bears the number ""3"" as part of its designation, and it is consequently referred to as a ""three-wheeler"" on occasion. It also has three models: the 250, 400 and 500. The 2009 Piaggio MP3 is the fourth model year of the scooter; it was introduced in 2006.

The three-digit suffixes for each model of the 2009 Piaggio MP3 denote the displacement of the bike’s engine. It is a four-stroke single overhead camshaft unit with four valves on its single cylinder, and a bore and stroke of 2.8 by 2.4 inches. The MP3 250 engine has a displacement of 244.3 cubic centimeters (cc), the one on the 400 is 398.9cc and the one on the 500 is 492.7cc. The numbers are rounded up to 250cc, 400cc and 500cc, thus the three-digit model designations.

The engines of the 2009 Piaggio MP3 also differ in terms of power and torque. The MP3 250 engine produces 22.5 horsepower at 8,250 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 15.5 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque at 6,750 RPM. The MP3 400 is the middling model, with an engine that generates 34 horsepower at 7,550 RPM and 27.3 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 RPM. The top-level MP3 500 has an engine that pumps out 40 horsepower at 7,250 RPM and 31.1 lb-ft of torque at 5,550 RPM. Maximum speed is 77 miles per hour (mph) for the MP3 250, 88 mph for the MP3 400 and 89 mph for the MP3 500.

The 2009 Piaggio MP3 requires premium fuel to run. Each model has a maximum fuel capacity of 3.2 gallons, which gives the bike a great driving range. The continuously variable transmission that the engine is paired with permits unlimited shifting through an unlimited number of effective gear ratios, thus improving fuel efficiency. However, fuel efficiency differs from one version of the 2009 Piaggio MP3 to the other. The MP3 250 has the best fuel economy, with a gas mileage range of 60 to 65 miles per gallon (mpg). The MP3 400 is in the middle, with a range of 57 to 59 mpg; while the MP3 500, with a 55-to-57-mpg range, is the least fuel efficient of the three models.

The 2009 Piaggio MP3 is available in a great range of colors. The MP3 250 comes in gray or black, the MP3 400 comes in Midnight Blue or gray, and the MP3 500 comes in Dragon Red or black. An all-wheel disc brake layout gives the scooter superior braking to the traditional front-disc rear-drum format. A two-front wheel independent tilting for the front suspension and twin-sided swing arm for the rear suspension gives the MP3 a stable ride. The aluminum wheels on the bike consist of two 12-inch wheels in the front; and at the back, a 12-inch wheel on the 250 and a 14-inch wheel for the 400 and 500 models.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, or MSRPs, for the 250, 400 and 500 models of the 2009 Piaggio MP3 are $7,199, $8,699 and $8,899, respectively.
