Before the concept of an off-road closed-course competition production model was made popular, the YZ250 two-stroke motocrosser was a commonly used base model for off-road racing. In only a few modifications, the popular and well-respected platform could be modified into a GP racer, a desert racer, or even a cross-country racebike. Yamaha responded to the masses by offering up the YZ250X, a variant of the iconic motocross bike with only light modifications that help prepare it for life beyond the MX track.
Compared to the YZ250, the YZ250X features two-stroke power tuned for enduro, hare scrambles, and GNCC-style racing with unique ignition mapping and a slightly lower compression ratio (7.9–9.4:1 versus the YZ’s 8.9–10.6:1). A wide-ratio five-speed transmission gives a broader spread of power and higher overall top speed. An 18-inch rear wheel, sealed O-ring chain, fuel petcock with “reserve,” and a kickstand further distinguish it from its motocross sibling. The aluminum frame chassis and desirable KYB suspension including the 48mm SSS (Speed-Sensitive System) carry over from the YZ platform, though the Kayaba suspension is specially tuned for the rigors of off-road.
For 2025, the YZ250X receives some minor upgrades, including a new high-capacity radiator for improved cooling, toolless fork compression damping adjust knobs, and fresh graphics.
The 2025 Yamaha YZ250X is available in Yamaha blue for $8099.
- KTM 250 XC, $11,199
- Husqvarna TE 250, $11,349
- Beta 250 RR Race, $10,499
