Harley-Davidson Motorclothes FXRG Perforated Leather Jacket | MC Tested

Think of it as the anti-biker jacket. Long on comfort, replete with nifty features and inhabiting a well thought-out design, the FXRG Perforated Leather Jacket is a functional, three-season antidote for the sort of crusty classic you’d expect to find crumbling in Eric Von Zipper’s closet. FXRG is Motor Company shorthand for functional riding gear, and like most everything else in that section of the Motorclothes catalog, this jacket lives up to the name.

Cut from tough, supple cowhide that’s also water-resistant enough to shrug off the occasional drizzle, the design starts with pre-curved sleeves for freedom of motion. Snap-equipped tabs adjust the waist to match yours, and a built-in zipper lets it dock with a pair of leather pants. The lower torso and inner sleeves are perforated with a diamond-plate pattern designed to deflect sunlight and camouflage the actual holes that let outside air move through when necessary. But this isn’t just a summer jacket. Behind the permanent CoolMax liner, a zip-out Gore-Tex Windstopper liner keeps the chill out on cool rides and doubles as a casual jacket that’s stylish enough to wear to dinner afterward. Removable CE-approved armor at the elbows, shoulders and back provides substantial impact defense without getting in the way of a good ride. Reflective Scotchlite piping makes it much easier to see after dark. Beyond that, a lot of clever details distance the FXRG from your average black leather jacket.

Begin with a removable kidney belt to help support your inner workings and lower back on long rides. You like pockets? The FXRG starts with two zippered hand-warmer pockets on the outside. There are two more zippered pockets inside, along with a larger cargo pocket, a cell-phone pocket capable of accommodating most current smartphones, complete with a flap to allow headphone cord access. There’s even a pocket to keep your sunglasses or other prescription eyewear safe and sound, complete with a super-soft lens-wipe clipped to its own elastic tether.

All those features add up to a relatively heavy jacket, especially with the Gore-Tex liner in place, making it warm enough for fall and even early-winter rides, unless you live somewhere like Duluth, Detroit or Milwaukee, where the FXRG Midweight leather jacket ($650; $670 in Tall sizes) is warmer and waterproof. Zip out the liner and the perforated version stays reasonably cool on hot rides as long as you’re moving, but things heat up in a hurry in stopped traffic.

Excellent materials and workmanship along with minimal logos create a classy, durable jacket that should serve well for years to come. It comes with a five-year warranty just in case something should go wrong. So if you’re looking for a clean, classic look, modern amenities and plenty of pockets without the risk of being mistaken for Eric Von Zipper, this one deserves serious consideration. It’s available in any color you want as long as it’s black, in men’s sizes XS through 5XL.

Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars.

An authentic modern antidote for that crusty old biker jacket.

Having a pocket for your sunglasses or prescription eyewear is nice, but the elastic lanyard and microfiber polishing cloth–complete with bar and shield–are brilliant.
