2009 Yamaha Stratoliner Review


The 2009 Yamaha Stratoliner is a work of art, from its best-in-class jewel-like fit and finish, all the way down to its key design. Introduced in 2006 as the Japanese manufacturer's premier touring bike, the Yamaha Stratoliner offers all of the trappings one could look for in a comfortable and relaxed riding experience.

Powered by a strong 113 cubic-inch, 1854cc air-cooled, pushrod V-Twin engine with computer-controlled twin-bore downdraft electronic fuel-injection, the 2009 Yamaha Stratoliner delivers optimum engine efficiency, and accurate throttle response across a range of driving conditions. Equipped with a two-into-one exhaust system that includes an Exhaust Ultimate Power (EXUP) valve, the bike produces maximum torque at an easy 2500 rpm.

The Yamaha Stratoliner's engine also features plated cylinders, oil jet-cooled forged pistons, and twin counter balancers for ensuring a smooth, but satisfyingly rumbly, ride. Its transistor-controlled electric ignition ensures reliable starts in all climates.

The Stratoliner's aluminum frame is light and rigid, and helps give the bike a straight-edged, streamlined appearance. And with 49.6 percent of its weight distributed to the front, the bike exhibits superior handling and maneuverability, especially for one so heavy (802 lbs. wet). The front end's 46mm fork tubes feature slant-cut stainless covers for a handsome design accent, while the single rear shock is tucked out of sight, further accentuating the bike's forward-leaning look.

Set atop the 2009 Yamaha Stratoliner's gorgeous frame is a flangeless, teardrop 4.5 gallon capacity fuel tank. Beyond that is the bike's sculpted seat, comfortably set just 27.8 inches off the ground, for a wonderfully low center of gravity, and fully removable, lockable leather-covered sidebags. The Stratoliner's passenger backrest is also removable, as is its windshield. The bike features classic clock-style instrumentation, with neo-retro styling that includes an analog speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge. The twin trip meters, odometer, and diagnostics are digitalized. The super-bright multi-reflector headlight provides exceptional visibility in all conditions, and the LED taillight and turn signals make the bike highly visible to other drivers.

As stated, the 2009 Yamaha Stratoliner is a heavy machine, so it requires a superior braking system in order to deliver optimum stopping power -- and thankfully, it has it. The bike features dual 298mm hydraulic discs on the front end, and a 320mm hydraulic disc on the rear. It has 12-spoke cast wheels with a 130/70-18 tire on the front, and a 190/60-17 tire on the rear, that together deliver an incredibly smooth ride and excellent traction, even on the most challenging roadways. Coming in at 101.6 inches long with a 67.5 inch wheelbase, the 2009 Yamaha Stratoliner is one long and lean touring cruiser. Capable of getting 42 miles to the gallon, this best-selling bike will allow you to enjoy close to 200 miles of riding enjoyment before having to stop for a refill.

The 2009 Yamaha Stratoliner is available in two models – the Base Stratoliner, and the Stratoliner S. Both bikes feature the same engine and operational specifications. The primary differences are in the fit and finish of the bikes, with the Stratoliner S being made available in Galaxy Blue or Black Cherry finishes, and the Base model being made available only in a Liquid Silver/Pearl White color scheme.
