2006 Kawasaki Concours Review

With a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $8,499, the 2006 Kawasaki Concours marked the end of the nameplate’s two-decade production run. However, its manufacturer – Japanese automaker Kawasaki – had by this time polished up the sport-touring bike to its best possible shape.

The 2006 Kawasaki Concours is powered by a formidable four-stroke horizontal in-line four-cylinder engine, which displaces at 997 cubic centimeters and has four intake valves on each cylinder. Accompanied by a temperature warning gauge, the engine has liquid cooling for keeping it at a temperature for optimal operation and preventing overheating. The bore and stroke for each 2006 Kawasaki Concours is 2.92 by 2.29 inches (74 by 58 millimeters), and the compression ratio is 10.2 to 1. Each engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, which features the manufacturer’s exclusive Positive Neutral Finder for shifting to the neutral gear when the bike comes to a standstill. Another convenience feature is the electric ignition for starting the bike.

For fuel, each 2006 Kawasaki Concours comes equipped with a 7.5-gallon (28.4-liter) gas tank. The result is a driving range better than most sport-touring bikes. Also featured is a shaft-based drive for reducing the amount of maintenance required for the bike.

The 2006 Kawasaki Concours is built with a steel frame and covered in sharp-edged plastic sporting a Metallic Nocturne Blue / Metallic Graystone scheme. A triple-density, deeply contoured foam seat covered with vinyl provides comfort for the driver, as well as one passenger. A spoiler on the bike adds to its aerodynamic design, and a windshield keeps off the rushing wind and flying debris. Apart from the aforementioned temperature gauge, the digital cluster of the 2006 Concours offers a clock, tachometer, trip odometer, speedometer, and fuel level warning gauge. Also included are rearview mirrors and a halogen headlight for enhanced visibility; and lots of storage that includes two vinyl side cases flanking the bike, an under-seat compartment and a glove box.

Brakes on the 2006 Kawasaki Concours consist of discs fitted on the five-spoke aluminum wheels (18-inch ones at the front, 16-inch ones at the back). With a size of 11.8 inches (300 mm), the dual disc brakes are implemented to provide superior stopping power, as well as withstand a long period of pad wear. Suspension consists of a tough and thick 1.6-inch (41-mm) telescopic fork at the front and a lightweight UNI-TRAK® twin-sided aluminum swing arm at the back for a smooth and controlled driving feel. Also featured is an air-adjustable shock absorber.

Each 2006 Kawasaki Concours has a length of 90.2 inches (around 2,292 mm), width of 36.6 inches (929.6 mm), height of 55.7 inches (1,414.8 mm) and a wheelbase of 61.2 inches (1,554.5 mm). Its ground clearance is measured at 5.1 inches (129.5 mm), and its aforementioned seat is set at a height of 31.1 inches (789.9 mm). The dry weight for each 2006 Concours is 595 lbs. (269.9 kilograms).

Supremely built with great engine power, remarkable fuel economy, and a host of advanced or convenience features, the 2006 Kawasaki Concours is arguably one of the top sport-touring motorcycles for its model year: virtually ideal for either performance enthusiasts or more casual riders. It is also perhaps the most logical choice for the now-discontinued nameplate. Thus the 2006 Concours is far from a poor swan song.
