2005 Ural Wolf Review


Legend has it that Ural is a direct, part-for-part copy of a 1930s BMW R71, Whether the plans were purchased from BMW or stolen outright, they were the same bike. Not much has changed since then. The technology is still much the same with the upgrades being provided by the implementation of Japanese parts, which is a good thing. The Ural Wolf is the only one that has a more modern look going for it. Sort of. The solo chopper design is said to have been taken from the Moscow's Russian Night Wolfs motorcycle club. The bike has the look of a BMW chopper; it's hard to look at this version of a chopper and not see the standard V-Twin styling.

Yes, you have it exactly right, Ural built a chopper and left the same boxer, air-cooled, 749 cc, horizontally opposed, two-cylinder four-stroke in place. The front suspension is a slightly wider telescopic fork type front end with an attached fender, smaller in design than the rest of the Ural line. This sits atop an 18-inch chromed spoke wheel. The rear wheel is a matching 16 inch. The slightly elongated five gallon tank feeds dual Keihin carburetors. The 99.6-inch overall length also helps with the illusion of a chopper.

The four-speed transmission works with a shaft final drive. It’s the same transmission as all the other Urals, so it still has a reverse gear but with a lockout to prevent you from going into reverse on two wheels. A Brembo hydraulic disc provides stopping power in front and an IMZ rear drum brake the rear. Even though Brembo enjoys a great name in brakes, this is still not a combination that gives it all the stopping power this bike needs. Give yourself plenty of stopping distance. The Wolf gets a little more power with the lighter weight of this bike, so you can expect speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

Not an eye catcher, like the rest of the Ural line, this bike can still hold its own. It does still have most of the quirks and foibles of the Ural line. It doesn't come with a factory installed tool box. Be sure to buy one that looks good with the bike. Pick up an Ushanka hat too, so you can get the true Russian biker effect.
