“All my friends know the low rider.” —War

Ask 100 people to sketch out the consummate cruiser, and the aggregate illustration would probably resemble the Softail Low Rider. As part of the all-new 2018 Softail family, for the first time in 42 model years, the Low Rider now uses invisible monoshock rear suspension instead of traditional twin shocks. (Harley has fully retired the previous twin-shock Dyna platform to simplify and modernize the lineup.) In any event, the reborn Low Rider is a styling masterwork. Lean, mean, and clean, it sets a new benchmark for Big Twins.

It’s been said, “What looks right, is right.” And that’s exactly the case with the Low Rider, starting with the Milwaukee-Eight 107ci engine and incorporating the new frame. Lighter and stiffer, and imbued with more supple suspension, it contributes to much crisper handling than previous Dyna and Softail models. Besides the clutter-free 1970s-inspired styling, we like the Radiate wheels (19-inch front, 16-inch rear), the amazing 47-mpg estimated fuel economy, and the cool Vivid Black paint scheme, energized by blue and red “AMF-era” stripes.

Likes: Best engine, best chassis, best styling, no gimmicks.

Dislikes: The 30-degree rake and long 64.2-inch wheelbase portend slow steering.

Verdict: If you want "the Harley Experience," go buy this bike—one and done.
