2020 BMW S 1000 XR First Look Preview

BMW’s 2020 S 1000 XR is lighter, faster, and more agile.

BMW have given its S 1000 XR an extensive overhaul, with revisions being revealed during this year's EICMA show in Milan. Changes include an update to the 999cc engine, suspension refinements, new electronics, updated looks, and weight reduction over last year's model.

Engine Updates

The mill of the new S 1000 XR is still derived from the inline four used in BMW’s S 1000 RR, but for 2020 it’s been revamped to provide better power delivery throughout the rev range and save weight.

The compression ratio was increased, and longer gear ratios were designed for 4th, 5th, and 6th gears, providing a smoother ride in the upper range. Power in the low- to midrange were improved as well, and at its peak the S 1000 XR pumps out 165 hp at 11,000 rpm and 84 pound-feet of torque at 9,250 rpm.

Intake valves are hollow drilled, helping to reduce weight, and the DLC-coated rocker arms have been designed to be 25-percent lighter than last year’s version. The engine housing was changed to cut weight and the water and oil pump were combined into a single unit. The size of the engine was reduced as well, thanks to updates such as integrating the starter motor into the housing behind the cylinders and moving to a single gear wheel on the crankshaft.

Changes to the intake system and cam profiles contribute to the mill’s improved performance, with flow controlled by a full ride-by-wire system.

BMW have also included new electronically managed engine brake control to smooth the rear wheel during downshifts. This combines with a slipper clutch to promise a velvety experience when dropping down the gears.

Spent gasses flow out through a new exhaust system, with a more compact silencer for an improvement in the sound of the S 1000 XR. It contains two, three-way catalytic converters to help ensure Euro-5 compliance.

New Chassis and Suspension

Engineers started with the frame, creating a flex frame design that’s changed from the previous model. The engine bears more of the load with the updated frame, allowing designers to reduce the overall weight of the frame by 2-percent. The design of the main frame, rear frame, and swingarm were reconfigured too in order to optimize stiffness and flex. It’s narrower overall and allows for a more neutral and comfortable ride position.

The swingarm is all-new, allowing for a new rear suspension layout that helps to reduce unsprung mass. It also offers slightly more rear wheel travel than the 2019 model. The 45mm fork offers the same 5.9 inches travel, and both units are controlled by the latest generation of BMW Motorrad Dynamic ESA. Dynamic ESA Pro is available as an upgrade.

The light-alloy wheels were borrowed from the S 1000 RR for additional weight savings and improved handling characteristics. ABS Pro is now standard on the S 1000 XR, providing straight line and corner anti-lock function, and Dynamic Brake Control is also included, ensuring no accidental acceleration occurs while braking.

Electronics Package and Aesthetics

The generous suite of electronics aids can be managed from a new 6.5-inch TFT screen taken from the S 1000 RR. In addition to the braking, suspension, and engine brake systems there’s also a new 6-axis IMU, four ride modes, DTC wheelie control, Dynamic Traction Control, and Hill Start Control. HP Shift Assist Pro and electronic cruise control are available as upgrades. Lighting is LED throughout. Headlight Pro adaptive turning lights are available as upgrades.
