2009 Yamaha PW Review


The 2009 Yamaha PW50 offers younger riders the chance to learn how to ride a motorcycle on a bike that's lightweight, easy to control, and incredibly well-built. Weighing a feathery 89 lbs. with a full tank of gas, and having a seat height of just 19.1 inches, the PW50 is perfectly suited for shorter riders and first-time riders alike, and its automatic transmission with adjustable throttle control makes it easy and safe to operate for all experience levels.

The PW50 has a small 50cc two-stroke engine with reed valve induction that, despite its size, is surprisingly strong. Fuel is delivered via the bike's VM12 carburetor, giving the shaft-driven bike 2.7 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 2.8 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm.

Although the Yamaha PW50 is a two-stroke bike, it doesn't require the rider to pre-mix the fuel. Just fill up the oil reservoir when you fill up the 0.5 gallon gas tank, and you're ready to ride; the bike automatically handles the fuel mix. Yamaha recommends that the bike's engine warm up prior to riding it, and since the bike has an automatic transmission, this means that a parent will have to lift the bike onto its stand, so the rear wheel can spin, while the engine gets up to temperature.

Braking is handled by drum brakes in front and back, which proves to be highly effective for controlling the bike's forward progress, while the telescopic front suspension with 2.4 inches of travel, and the rear's unit swing arm with 2.0 inches of travel, help the bike navigate the bumpier trails with ease.

Externally, the 2009 Yamaha PW50 looks like a smaller version of the Japanese manufacturer's motocross line of bikes with sharp-pointed fenders, a long and lean seat, big chunky tires, and the iconic Team Yamaha blue and white paint job. All of the bike's engine parts have been painted black to help contrast against the blue and white color scheme of the plastic body panels, and the bright white of the three-spoke wheel.

Everything about the 2009 Yamaha PW50 is rider-friendly. From the perfectly positioned handlebars and automatic transmission, to its adjustable throttle screw and class-exclusive, maintenance-free shaft drive, plenty of thought went into making the PW50 the ultimate beginner's bike.
