2009 Hyosung Prima Review

One of the mid-level scooters from Hyosung Corp.'s line-up, the Prima was available as a lone model for the 2009 model year. Officially known as the ""2009 Hyosung Prima SF50,"" the scooter had a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,799.

Available as a blue or red scooter, the Hyosung Prima gets its part of its suffix (""50"") from the displacement of its engine, which is measured at 49 cubic centimeters. A two-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder unit with a reed intake valve train, the engine on the 2009 Prima generates 3.5 horsepower at 7,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 2.8 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 RPM. It has a bore and stroke of 1.61 x 1.47 inches (41 x 37.4 millimeters) and compression of 7.2 to 1. The engine relies on a 14-mm Mikuni carburetor for fueling, and it is linked with an electric starter for ignition.

Each 2009 Hyosung Prima engine is mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission, or CVT. It is a type of automatic gearbox that ensures greater engine efficiency and fuel economy by having access to an unlimited number of gear ratios. The gas tank that goes on each scooter can hold up to 1.3 gallons (4.8 liters).

For braking, the 2009 Hyosung Prima has a 6.4-inch (162-millimeter) dual disc at the front and a drum brake at the back. For absorbing bumps and ensuring a smooth ride, the 2009 Prima uses a suspension comprising a telescopic fork and a single-sided swing arm with a shock absorber. The wheels on the scooter are ten inches in measurement and made of steel.

The 2009 Hyosung Prima is designed as a half-fairing (lower fairing) scooter, with fork guards, exhaust guard and fenders covering its solid steel frame. A two-piece vinyl seat provides enough room for two occupants. The digital instrumentation on the 2009 Prima consists of a speedometer and fuel level warning gauge.

There is an area on the 2009 Hyosung Prima for hanging a helmet, as well as under-seat and lockable compartments for storage. For enhancing visual perception when on the road, the 2009 Prima provides halogen lighting and a pair of side mirrors.

Each 2009 Hyosung Prima has a length of 70.2 inches (1,783.1 mm), width of 25.6 inches (650.2 mm), height of 41.9 inches (1,064.3 mm), wheelbase of 48.9 inches (1,242.1 mm). The ground clearance and seat height of the scooter are measured at 4.5 inches (114.3 mm) and 28.3 inches (720 mm), respectively. The 2009 Prima has a dry weight of 176 lbs. (79.8 kilograms).

For better braking and handling, more storage space and greater engine power from a Hyosung scooter, it is recommended to go with something like the MS3. Otherwise the 2009 Hyosung is a rather decent bike that shares a significant number of components with its more advanced siblings.
