2008 QLINK Commuter Review


QLINK, the U.S. distributor for the Chinese manufacturer CF Moto, has a reputation for putting out powersport vehicles for those who aren’t quite in the market for a heavy duty motorcycle. Often, that means a fun, non-threatening, easy-to-drive scooter, and the 2008 QLINK Commuter certainly fits the mold. The Commuter is a sporty looking and versatile scooter, great for a fun spin through back country roads or as a reliable means of transportation to and from the office five days a week.

If you’re a scooter enthusiast, you may find a thing or two to be desired about the 2008 QLINK Commuter. The rear drum brakes don’t exactly top on a dime, and the top speed won’t blow you away. On the other hand, a lot of scooter drivers are looking for a way to get around comfortably and have a little fun, rather than chasing high-octane action, and in this area, the QLINK Commuter will do the job for many riders. The QLINK Commuter holds the road well and allows for comfortable, confident riding, which is exactly what many casual scooter riders want out of their heavy use scooters. That comfortable ride comes courtesy of a telescopic front suspension and twin shock rear suspension, along with a very yielding leather seat that driver and rear passenger will both appreciate.

The 2008 QLINK Commuter is an affordable scooter with an MSRP of $3349, for which you get a nice-looking machine reminiscent of the Honda Helix, although considerably cheaper. On the other hand, the QLINK Commuter doesn’t come with the Honda reputation of solid, reliable construction. The Commuter has some nice features, including a large top trunk big enough for your helmet, a spacious rear trunk for your briefcase, backpack, or any other extra little necessities, a rear spoiler and an FM audio system along with a USB port for playing downloaded music. The relatively low 28.7 inch seat height makes for easy mounting and dismounting of the scooter, which comes in yellow, white, and burgundy red.

The 2008 QLINK Commuter features a single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 244cc four-stroke engine which generates 18 horsepower and 17.6 lb-ft of torque. It’s linked to a fully automatic Continuously Variable Transmission. That’ll get you pretty smoothly up to 60 or 70 miles per hour if need be, so while there are scooters out there that can outrun the Commuter, you should have plenty of speed to meet your needs and get you where you’re going on time. The Commuter gets about 70 mpg, with a fuel tank capacity of 3.2 gallons, so this scooter should live up to its name and get you there and back without need for a fill up.

When you’re considering whether or not to purchase the 2008 QLINK Commuter, the main question you’re going to find yourself facing is do you want to go with a Chinese scooter that looks like a Japanese scooter but doesn’t have quite the design finesse, or a Japanese scooter that costs considerably more? When it comes to looks and features, the 2008 QLINK Commuter actually has some real advantages over its Japanese competitors, but it isn’t quite the same finely honed machine, and over a few years, you might find yourself spending that extra thousand dollars at the garage getting your Commuter tuned and adjusted so it’s just the way you like it. On the other hand, for some casual scooter drivers, the Commuter is just about perfect as is, especially when factoring in its affordability and its design is simple enough that that mechanic shouldn’t have too much trouble tweaking any issues you might have.
