2005 Aprilia Mojito Review

For the 2005 model year, the Aprilia Mojito, a scooter from Italian manufacturer Piaggio’s subsidiary Aprilia, was made available in two models: the Custom 50 and Custom 150. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Custom 50 was $2,499. The Custom 150 got an MSRP of $3,999. A decent scooter for its time, the 2005 Aprilia is ideal for the casual rider.

The models of the 2005 Aprilia Mojito are named after their respective engine displacements via the numerical suffixes. The Custom 50 is powered by a two-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder engine that displaces at 49.4 cubic centimeters (rounded up to 50 cc). The Custom 150 has a larger and more powerful engine: a four-stroke unit that displaces at 149.4 cc (rounded up to 150 cc). Also, the Custom 150 engine uses an overhead camshaft configuration, rather than the reed valve train on the Custom 50 engine.

The engine on the 2005 Aprilia Mojito is fueled by a 24-millimeter Walbro carburetor and paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). By shifting through an unlimited number of gear ratios, the CVT can improve engine efficiency and fuel economy. The Custom 50 gets a fuel tank with a peak capacity of two gallons (7.6 liters). The fuel tank on the Custom 150 can hold 0.4 gallons (1.4 liters) more.

Each 2005 Aprilia Mojito gets a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the back. While it is not as good as an all-wheel disc brake set-up, it is more effective than an all-wheel drum brake layout. The suspension on the 2005 Mojito consists of a front telescopic fork and a rear shock with a single-sided swing arm for promoting a smooth ride. A 12-inch aluminum wheel is placed at the front; while a smaller, 10-inch wheel is located at the back.

Made with a sturdy steel frame, the 2005 Aprilia Mojito is a half-fairing scooter, with fenders and exterior covering. The scooter is available in three color schemes: black, black-and-blue, and white. A wind deflector at the front of the 2005 Mojito keeps off the wind and flying debris.

A driver and a passenger can sit comfortably on the 2005 Aprilia Mojito. Its digital instrumentation consists of a trip odometer and a speedometer. Under-seat and lockable compartments comprise the scooter’s storage bike. Added on the 2005 Mojito were a halogen headlight and a pair of side mirrors for enhanced driving visibility.

With a wheelbase of 53.1 inches (1,349 millimeters) and dry weight of 253 lbs. (115 kilograms), the Custom 150 is the larger and heavier of the two models under the 2005 Aprilia Mojito template. The Custom 50 has a wheelbase of 52.1 inches (1,300 mm) and weighs 198 lbs. (89.8 kg). The one-piece vinyl seat on the Custom 50, at 30.3 inches (769.6 mm), is set higher than at the Custom 150, which has a seat height of 29.7 inches (754 mm).
