EICMA 2015: 2016 Ducati Hypermotard 939 Announced in Milan, Italy

The Most Powerful Hyper Yet!

Since its debut in 2007 Ducati 's Hypermotard has been one of the most rambunctious bikes on the road. And for 2016 Ducati has upped the Hyper ante with a new 937cc version of its 11° Testastretta V-twin engine, just announced today at EICMA in Milan, Italy. The larger, more powerful 939 motor will power the new Hypermotard 939 and the track-oriented Hypermotard 939 SP, as well as the touring-tuned Hyperstrada 939. All three bikes will have fully adjustable suspension, Brembo brakes with Bosch-backed ABS, adjustable traction control, and ride modes.

The 939’s extra 116cc come by way of a larger bore, up 6mm from 88 to 94mm. Ducati says this new motor—which also has a revised crank with bigger journals, new cylinders and cylinder heads, and a new oil cooler—will produce 113 hp at 9,000 rpm and 72 lb.-ft. of torque at 7,500 rpm. That’s not a lot more horsepower compared to the outgoing Hypermotard 821 (which put down a claimed 110 hp at 9,250 rpm), but the 939’s 72 lb.-ft. of torque is quite a bit stronger than the 821’s claimed 66. More torque means stronger acceleration and overall improved versatility and fun.

With fully adjustable suspension, powerful Brembo brakes backed by multi-level ABS, and a claimed curb weight of 424 pounds (up 13 pounds form the outgoing Hypermotard 821), the new Hypermotard 939 is likely to be the most thrilling Hyper to date.

If the base bike doesn’t sound spicy enough, the SP model may be more your style. It’s dripping with premium parts like Öhlins suspension, magnesium engine covers, forged Marchesini wheels, carbon fiber paneling, and track-ready Pirelli rubber. And for the touring set, the Hyperstrada 939 features capacious side bags, a wider saddle, a 20mm taller handlebar, and a windscreen.

Pricing has yet to be announced on the three new models, and there’s no word yet as to when bikes will be available in US dealers.
