2005 Suzuki DR Review

The 2005 Suzuki DR dual-sport motorcycle is available in two sub-models – the entry level 200SE, and the larger, more powerful 650SE. True to form, the Japanese manufacturer has created both versions to perform exactly as expected, with each bike capable of delivering exceptional street and off-road performance, as well as a fun and rewarding experience to its targeted rider.

While the two Suzuki DRs feature many similar elements and design aesthetics, there are significant differences between the bike models. For starters, the 200SE is an entry-level bike that's built for new or younger riders, so it is natUrally smaller, lighter, and less powerful than its big brother, the 650SE. The 200SE has a reliable four-stroke, SOHC, single-cylinder, 199cc Twin Dome Combustion Chamber (TDCC) engine, with a Mikuni 31mm constant velocity carburetor. The Suzuki 650SE, on the other hand, sports a four-stroke, single-cylinder, SOHC, four-valve, air/oil cooled 644cc engine, with a Mikuni 40mm ""slingshot"" carburetor.

The bikes also feature different suspension and braking systems, although it is important to note that each is equipped with the appropriate systems that deliver the best possible results for their design. The 2005 Suzuki DR200SE features a front hydraulic disc and rear drum braking system, while the DR650SE has hydraulic discs on both the front and back. Both bikes feature telescopic front fork suspensions, and a twin sided swing arm rear suspension, but whereas the 200SE's suspension has eight inches of travel on the front and back, the 650SE has a whopping 10.2 inches of travel, and its rear suspension features adjustable rebound damping, while the 200SE's does not.

Stylistically, the two bikes are visually similar. They both sport large 3.4 gallon fuel tanks, folding-type mirrors, long and plush seats, aggressively sharp fenders, and chunky front and rear tires with special tread patterns for on- and off-road driving. Both bikes are equipped with a bright 55-watt halogen headlight (the 650SE's has 60-watt high-beam capabilities) for safe nighttime riding, and a low maintenance, digitally-controlled CDI ignition system for perfect ignition timing at all engine speeds.
