Naked and unafraid.

2018 BMW R 1200 RBMW

Utilizing an evolved version of BMW’s famous opposed twin, the naked R1200R boasts fuel injection, a combination of liquid- and air-cooling, and DOHC, four-valve heads to produce a claimed 125 hp. That’s not superbike-esque power, but it doesn’t need to be for this member of BMW’s “Roadster” family. And that’s because the 1,170cc R1200R’s end goal isn’t high-rpm zeal but everyday riding; peak power hits at a reasonable 7,750 rpm and peak torque arrives at 6,500 rpm. An internal balance shaft smooths power delivery.

Other features helping to make the R1200R excel as an all-rounder include a genial multiplate wet clutch, a versatile six-speed gearbox, and the combination of an inverted fork and single-shock Paralever rear suspension. Integrated antilock brakes, stability control, selectable “Rain” and “Road” power modes, and multifunction instrumentation are likewise standard. Numerous options include a Premium package that includes such niceties as keyless operation (as long as the fob is in your pocket), heated grips, real-time tire-pressure monitoring, and “Gear Shift Assist Pro,” which allows clutchless upshifts and downshifts on the fly.

Likes: Shock spring preload and rebound damping are hand-adjustable

Dislikes: No standard fork adjustability, LED taillight but no LED headlight

Verdict: A strikingly stylish standard
