MC Tested: Hard Miles DVD

_Hard Miles: The True Story of the 2007 Iron Butt Rally _is the first documentary to chronicle the extreme zaniness of what's been called "The World's Toughest Motorcycle Competition." The hour-long video follows riders from pre-rally preparation through the finish, with post-rally commentary from haggard, road-weary competitors. Riders' bizarre motivation, aspirations and fears are explored through thoughtful interviews conducted by director Dean Tanji and his sons, Colin and Derek. Tanji is no poseur living vicariously through his film: With three Iron Butt Rallies to his credit, including a top-15 finish in '03, he brings an authentic viewpoint to the video that balances the fierce competitiveness of the riders.

The editing is superb, splicing rolling footage with rider and organizer interviews, resulting in compelling stories that grip the viewer. Awesome route graphics underscore the immensity of the cross-country event. Bonus features include personal introductions of the '07 riders, showcasing the diversity of the field. The history of the rally is told by Mike Kneebone, the sadistic president of the Iron Butt Association, who seems gleeful in his manipulation of riders with routing puzzles. Hard Miles is a must-have addition to the library of any rider who's ever tested his or her endurance, even if only in their minds.
