Fun Factor: January 2004

Now and then we reflect soberly on our place in the universe. This isn't one of those times. Right now, it's time to hop on a powerfully cool mix of bikes, head out of town and have a blast.

Humans take themselves way too seriously. We obsess over tax-free annuities, West Nile virus, the Karbala Gap, earned-run averages and gingivitis. Thankfully, motorcycles provide a worry-free, yee-ha, all-purpose antidote for all that. Take as directed. Apply as necessary. Your results may vary.

Like you, we often take our bikes too seriously. We segment 'em, measure 'em, compare and contrast. We argue over tenths at the drag strip, agonize over tiny blips on a dyno curve. We dice segments into progressively finer sub-segments. The 636cc, inline-four Japanese race-replica rider becomes an entirely different species than somebody on a 1000cc V-twin, Italian naked-bike. Worse yet, this fog and swirl of facts, figures, data and debate can obscure why we ride in the first place-to have fun.

Cue the uncontrollable laughter and consummate joy from our January Fun Issue as you envision the Aprilia Tuono, BMW Rockster & R1150 GS, Buell Lightning, Ducati Monster S4R & Multistrada, Honda 919, Kawasaki Z1000, KTM Adventure S & Duke II, MV Agusta Brutale, Suzuki SV1000 & V-Strom, Triumph Speed Triple, and the Yamaha FZ1 & V-Max.

Anticipate Gina tightly wrapped in full-grain leather and your very own Motorcyclist calendar to keep track of the upcoming Fun in 2004. So many wonderful things to start the New Year off just right, eh ?
