Chad Reed dominates again in Texas

WORTHAM, TEXAS - The in form Chad Reed and his TwoTwo Motorsports/BelRay Racing outfit have continued to dominate the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, claiming their second consecutive round victory at the Freestone National in Wortham, Texas today.

Reed, who for the second week in a row qualified second, got off to a good start in the opening 30 minute moto and sat comfortably fourth out of Turn 1. Riding with calculated aggression, the Australian made a successful challenge for the lead mid race, passing Ryan Dungey and surprise early leader Christian Craig. He remained unchallenged over the closing laps and cruised to a comfortable victory.

The TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing Honda rider got another good start in the second moto and was third into Turn 1 before moving into second place before the end of the opening lap. From there Reed and race leader Ryan Dungey broke away from the field with less than 5 seconds separating the two riders.

At the half way mark Reed began making ground on Dungey, lapping nearly two seconds a lap quicker than the race leader. An uncharacteristic mistake in a deep sand section brought Reed to the ground, he remounted his Honda CRF450 immediately without losing track position but the mishap handed Dungey a healthy buffer of nearly 20 seconds .

Reed immediately set out to chase down Dungey, clawing back two seconds a lap out of his lead. With time running out a second place result seemed to be the reality for Reed but disaster struck Dungey with his Suzuki expiring less than two laps from the chequered flag. The Australian cruised past the slowing Suzuki to take his second moto win of the day, a perfect 50 points for the round and the overall round victory.

Although confident off the back of last weekend's opening round win at Hangtown, Reed said his team retained some caution, having only a week's respite between rounds to complete further work on the bike.

"The first moto was awesome," Reed explained. "I was really patient, was able to put some good laps together and pull out to a comfortable lead.

"In Moto 2 it was pretty much the same thing, just trying to put down some good laps and then unfortunately I crashed which cost me a lot of time. I was making ground but it wasn't going to be enough to catch Ryan but then he ran out of fuel, which allowed us to go 1-1.

"I saw him on the side of the track, which was a bummer for him. You don't want to win like that, but I felt like I had the pace until I threw it away in that second one," Reed concluded.

Today's result has now set Reed 21 points clear of second placed Dungey in the title chase.

The team will focus on testing before the third round of the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship - the Highpoint National at Mount Morris, Pennsylvania on Saturday June 11.
