2011 Kymco Like Review

In 2009, the Kymco Like joined the increasing ranks of cute little fuel-sipping urban scooters buzzing US streets. Following on the heels of the debut of the Like 50 in 2010, the 2011 Kymco Like 200i beefs up the power and technology. With its locking glove box, rear cargo box, and under-seat storage, it will serve the daily commute and the run to the store for odds and ends forgotten on earlier shopping trips. That is, if the odds and ends are small. Cargo decisions will need to be judicious. The trunk will hold a helmet, but the helmet will not go under the seat. The brakes are good, and the Like will take on an extra passenger on the vinyl seat without huffing too much. A detachable rear seat back can make that passenger feel more secure. It should be easy to attain 80 mpg, or even better with cautious motoring. This is a machine meant for town driving. A lap-timer is not in the list of accessories.

The 160cc electronic fuel-injected engine imparts more scoot into transportation adventures – certainly more than the 50-cc two-stroke on the original Like model. Both models blend agility, performance, and efficiency with fuel economy. Obviously the 163cc will be more performance-oriented and the 50cc more prone to miserliness with fuel. The little two-wheeler can be personalized to some degree with a modest set of options. Three colors - Black, Red, and Ivory – make up the selection palette for the 2011 Kymco Like. The headlight blends well with the front design, but is swept back at such an angle it can distract taller drivers. One owner put black tape over the top of the lamp to avoid being blinded by the glare. A high floorboard reduces legroom, and the handlebars may conflict with knees on sharper turns.

The engine is cooled with forced air. The instrument panel has a pleasing design with the speedometer easing its way into the bottom left of the fuel gauge. Controls on the handlebars are well designed. Overall, the 2011 Kymco Like gives an impression of well-built, solid durability. The rear seat is a bit too firm, but there are few flaws in these small cycles. It is good enough to make one forget the strange name. The largest manufacturer of these little machines makes Kymco bikes in Taiwan. The 2011 Kymco Like has enough styling nostalgia built into its plastic body to evoke memories of simpler times, but has a good mix of current technology to go with it. The manufacturer is credited with ISO-9001 manufacturing systems quality. That could bode well for customer satisfaction.
