The 2010 Ural Taiga Limited Edition is a perfect reflection of the Russian motorcycle-maker’s initial WWII efforts to build tough and utilitarian heavy sidecar bikes. The Irbit-based company originated in the 1940s to facilitate mobilization of the Soviet army against the German Special Forces and tanks. To match the exact requirements of the military, the original Ural units were designed by reverse engineering the late 1930s BMW R71 side car bike. However, what started as a matter of survival for the Red Army soon evolved into an emerging business. Due to the rise in popularity and demand for the vehicle, the manufacturing plant eventually started producing the vehicles for non-military purposes. Later, the company discovered that its business was sputtering in the Post-Communist era, like many other Soviet enterprises. This was when Ural decided to shift its sales strategy to attract those riders in the United States who seek utility.
For the new series, IMZ Ural took inspiration from one of the world’s largest northernmost forest frontier, the Taiga, which is where it draws its name. Designed for weekend off-road adventures, the special edition 2010 Taiga comes with the company’s signature on-demand sidecar drive along with a host of other accessories and practical tools. The off-road accessories including an auxiliary spot lamp and tow points are mainly for the rider to survive the most treacherous conditions and uncertain roads. The sidecar drive, on the other hand, enables riders to easily alter between dual wheel and single wheel drive for added off-road traction.
Tough and timeless, Ural’s new Taiga Limited Edition takes off-road performance to new heights. The bike is equipped with a 749 cc OHV Horizontally Opposed Air-cooled, four-stroke, flat twin cylinder engine with 40 horsepower (hp) The 2010 Taiga can thus achieve a top speed of 95 km per hour, with fuel tank capacity of 5.0 US gallons and with a dry weight of 335 kg or 739 lbs. In addition to the various engineering specifications, what particularly mesmerizes riders is Ural’s high retro design. Coming in a distinct matte larch green shade with a driver windshield, nose rack and a spotlight; the 2010 limited version is a great option for any vintage aficionado. The seating for the rider is also very relaxed and natUral with the seat height being 785 mm. The vehicle also comes with a host of other features like a survival kit, shovel, seat cover, hand winch, black Cordura tonneau, repair kit, and air pump.
Even though the sidecar motorcycle market has plenty of competitors like GG Duetto, Watsonian Squire, and Hongdu focusing on high-end sidecar conversions, Ural variants are a league apart. Part of its allure lies in the fact that the company retains its 1940s military purpose-built vintage feel. Although today, the Ural variants are more modernized, they still reflect decades of reliability and performance improvements. Besides, the vehicle is also known for its easy-to-handle and fix mechanicals that are perfect for a week in the wilderness.
