2010 Kymco Xciting Review

Kwang Yang Motor Co., known as Kymco, began making motor scooters in 1970. The Taiwanese company introduced the Xciting line in the United States in 2006. The maxi-scooter is the company’s best-selling line in this country. The Ri edition, in 250cc and 500cc models, was introduced in 2009, with new features including a tinted windscreen, fuel injection and a sportier appearance. Kymco offered three Xciting models in 2010: 250Ri, 500Ri and 500Ri ABS.

All models have three instrument gauges: analog speedometer in center spot, and a tachometer and fuel/temperature gauge on each side. Speedometer information includes time of day, engine diagnostics and the number of miles traveled. Other features include roomy under-seat storage with light, a lockable glove box, a parking brake, and folding foot pegs for the passenger. Reviewers note the Xciting is not as refined as other brands, but that is perfectly adequate for those who don’t ask a lot from their two wheels. Both 500Ri models are considered touring scooters, but the 250Ri, while looking like a maxi-scooter, doesn’t have quite the power for this. It can go up to 75 mph on flat roads, but has difficulty climbing hills and with stability under windy driving conditions. It may be better for scooter riders who commute, just drive around town or do short-distance highway driving. Reviews also note the Xciting’s fuel usage, at 65 mpg, is less than the mileage offered by comparable brands.

All three scooters come in red and white, with the ABS also coming in pewter/silver. These three sporty models are the same, except for engine size, price and weight. These mega-scooters are made of full-body plastic and have smaller wheels than comparable brands. The scooters feature electric starts, but the side stand must be up first. The key ignition is multi-functional: it can start the engine, open the one-piece seat and even open the gas cap. The Xciting 500Ri features a fuel injection engine, capable of accelerating from zero to 60 in 10.3 seconds. Maneuverability of the long frame is better at high speeds. It has a top speed of 100 mph. ABS brakes, weighing 15 pounds, were added as an option in 2009, becoming standard with 2013 models.

Kymco discontinued the 250Ri in 2011.
