KTM's 1290 Super Duke Spin-Off?

KTM’s first spin-off of its Super Duke could be this 1290 SM-T dressed for the open road.

KTM's already announced 1290 Super Adventure (see First Ride here) was the first repurpose of the 1,301cc V-twin powerplant, and this "1290 SMT" looks to be the next. Where the old 990 SMT was evolved from Super Moto models (hence the SM), this new bike is largely standard-issue 1290 Super Duke, though clearly dressed by the factory for longer range.

The most obvious changes are the windscreen and saddlebags, the latter of which mount to the exposed, trellis subframe in a similar fashion to factory Super Duke luggage. These hard boxes look much bigger, though, and are mounted farther back. The windshield mates with a different headlight assembly (probably mostly disguise makeup) that appears to leave room for a larger dashboard unit. GPS as a factory option wouldn’t surprise us. Additional bodywork on the lower edge of the fuel tank could be for better aerodynamics (or more disguising).

While the 1290 Super Adventure and new 1050 Adventure are based on the 1190 Adventure platform, this is the first spinoff of Super Duke. Expect this bike to surface later in 2015 as a 2016 model, with pricing between $17,000 and $20,000.

This conspicuous spy shot suggests that KTM wants to cause a stir with what appears to be a new SM-T model.
