Guzzi at one time was a fantastic motorcycle & actually is, the problem is with PIAGGIO. Here is a reason why I am telling you to stay away from this company. Guzzi Griso's use a dash that is junk. It will fail. They have failed from new to less than 15,000 miles at a cost to you if out of warrantee is $877.77. What happens is the dash can & will shut the engine down while riding. It also prevents the machine to start. My dash failed while riding & the engine shut down while traveling at 65 mph. 2. The stepper motors used are junk as well. They force the engine to rev higher up to 3000 rpm when the engine should be at idle. This is a safety hazard if the rider isn't minding his machine. This could send the rider into an accident & possible death to no less than injury. These problems happen to every Griso from 2006 on up. Not certain if they fixed it for the new models. I have read & contacted more than 30 owners with these failures. So Griso owners & want to be a owner beware. If you have a Griso & these failures have happens to you it's not isolated so contact Safecar.gov & file a complaint. This will save lives & your wallet.

Moto-Guzzi & PIAGGIO |

Speaking of which, I just rebuilt the forks and installed a nice set of tapered head bearings in my vstrom 1000 in anticipation of riding out to AMA Vintage days in July again. Anyway, back to the story. Mostly my collection is made of 2 strokes but I also have a yammy turbo and a venerable CB350 (same as my first bike). I found the following C/L ad on May 21st: ************** Motorcycle is in need of restoration. It is all there, but rusty. Only 6300 original miles, but may only good for scrap. Have title, willing to give up for free. Chrome is pitted, tires are flat. Engine turns over. Gas tank looks fine, plastic looks fine. ************** I wrote to the seller and told him that I wouldn't take it unless I honestly believed that I could restore it to it's former glory since I didn't really need another project. I also refused to take it for free if it was worth restoring. That must have convinced him to let me come and look at it. I was shocked to receive a phone-camera picture of a bright yellow bike in darned good condition! It is a CB400F with less then 6400 original miles. He rode it less then 400 miles after he bought it, then parked it where it's been since. My daughter and I drove over to his house that night. I was amazed....the bike is complete, needs a set of handlebars, front fender and muffler from what I could tell just looking at it in a large garage lit only by a 40w bulb but the tank is perfect inside and out as are the side covers and seat. I asked him how he kept the tank so nice and he said when he parked it, he knew it was going to be a while before he would be able to get to it so he drained the tank and carbs. He removed the plugs and sprayed the cylinders too! The engine turns over and I might, might even get away with not having to do the tedious task of rebuilding the carbs although all the tubing will be replaced as a matter of routine for me on a old bike. The seller is a prince of a man who told me that he had received well over 50 emails that day! He bought it and has owned it since 1978 hoping to one day get time to restore it but realized that day would never come so he was more interested in giving/selling it to someone who would put it back on the road....a perfect project for my GF and I! He had no idea what it was worth so I told him that even in this condition it was worth several hundred dollars and I asked if he would accept 200. I just didn't have the heart to offer any less even though he was offering it for free. It's just too nice to have taken advantage of him by trying to get it for nothing. I paid him the grand sum of $200 and took the signed title. I picked it up the next day and it is nicer then I had thought. I was planning on doing my H1F next but I'm going to slide it to the side and do this one first since it's going to take very little to get it right. I've since got it home and did some preliminary work to it. The carbs did indeed need to be rebuilt and they are on my work bench after taking a bath in my 7 gallon ultrasonic cleaner. All the electrics and lights work fine, including the starter. I poured a half teaspoon of oil into each cyl then slowly kicked it a few times to lube them. I also injected a half-pint of oil into the head to lube the insert bearings before pouring some gas into each carb boot so I could start it for a moment....just to be sure there wasn't any "clanks or clunks". It ran nice and smooth for a couple seconds so I removed the carbs. I've got the seat and tank off and have ordered a bunch of small parts and a few bigger ones. Once everything arrives, I'll get to work. Sweet! Yeah, it's not a triple like most of my bikes but it was too good to pass up. Sometimes, we got to get a classic just because.... Here's a link to my photobucket album for this bike for you guys. I took these after getting it home and rinsing it off before running down the ramp into my basement work shop. http://s808.photobucket.com/user/jeffkushner1/library/1976%20CB400F?sort=3&page=1 jeff

Picked up some Old School |

Some really great DP thumpers out there now, except for the seats. Your modern open class KTM/Husky street legal enduros (pre BMW) would be fun for dirt. If you like more street, a big, soft DR650 is nice on the highway (except for the seat again)My concerns with the KTM/Husky are reliability, longevity, parts availability and easy of maintenance/repair. The DR, KLR and XR 650 always come to mind as valid options. I'm not real familiar with the DR, had a GN400 once, it had character. Kick start only, and if you did any of the ritual wrong, it was not going to start. The Honda XR650L seems to require frequent valve adjustments, if memory serves me correctly, and sometimes it does not. What I do remember, vividly, is the local regional Honda rep telling me what I thought was insignificant, they use focus groups, and I had the feeling I was wasting his precious time. He cost Honda more than he has any idea, and you know what, I bet he does not care. The Kawi seems to have a cult following, and they can be had for a fair price. It's in the running - But I am not sure I would not quickly want more power, but with that comes more weight - No hurry, nothing but time.....

How do you know when it is time for another motorcycle? |

I like the more sport oriented machines. With my riding style, I tend to short shift without getting into the major power band of these bikes (around 5-8000 rpm). I really don't know why, it's just how I ride. I'm a small guy too - 5'5", 130lbs., so I don't need a lot to get me flying. That's also why I haven't tried out any of the supermoto type bikes, because of the high seats. I would like to find a bike that has really good torque in this rev range, to make it more fun for me ride. Requirements (in no particular order): 1. I would love to do some track days, but I don't necessarily need to keep up with the high power guys. 2. Decent daily commuter. 3. Good torque in lower rev range. 4. I DON'T want a Harley or cruiser! I have never ridden any Triumph, Aprillia or KTM, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something from one of those manufacturers (Speed Triple, Tuono, other Ducati's). Are supermoto's where it's at? Is there such a bike out there, new or used, or do I just need to change my riding style to match the more sporty oriented units? Please help!!! Pretty good article, except for one rather glaring factual error. I've owned a 690E since June 2008 and there's no way it is an under 50 HP bike and the 2013 690 is a full 690 cc and even stronger. Ari said he preferred riding the 690 using the soft map. My guess is he left it there when the dyno runs were done. The manual says the soft map reduces maximum HP to 70% of the normal or hard maps. Do the math and divide 48.9 by 0.7 to get a more realistic figure for the 690 HP. Cheers

Singles Club |

Especially today with money tight and circulation difficult to maintain for any publication its very important since no ad's, no magazine! I received my June edition and counted 72 pages of full page ad's, out of 122 pages total. That's not counting the half or quarter page ads or inside covers and not counting the trick of using a full page picture to lead an article... that works out to 41% content and a staggering 59% ad's. When the subscriber is paying a greater percentage of his money for people to sell to him rather then to provide knowledge, entertainment and other peoples different bike related experiences and fun , it's time to rethink the purpose of buying the magazine in the first place. The part that made it so bad was that it was so noticeable,it was mostly ads and very few articles and given the profusion of blogs today, I can't believe that the group couldn't round up more content and writers if getting a respectable amount of meat without resorting to so much filler was an important priority for them but since it apparently isn't, I'll get my "fix" somewhere else. I have subscribed for the past 6 years or so and used to subscribe for many years back in the 70's and 80's so I guess they won't miss one subscriber. It's a shame because I liked the guys, even if I didn't always agree.
