Apocryphal or not, that story is haunting: Jeffries, a nine-time TT-winner, was killed instantly after impacting a stone wall at 170 mph during practice for the 2003 Senior TT. Though there was nothing he could do for Jefferies, Dr. Peter Moran has saved countless other lives during his near-three-decade tenure as the TT's lead medical authority. I rode unchallenged for several laps, when a wheel suddenly appeared inside of me in Turn 10. Although I was already leaned over the curbing, the rider forced his way past me. It was Dave Roper, the legendary American road racer, aboard his ex-Cal Rayborn factory Aermacchi. Roper worked his way forward to join me ahead of the pack, and now he wanted to race. Race we did, drafting down the front straight and barreling into Turn 1 side-by-side, rubbing elbows at the exit and swapping the lead several times a lap. My Honda had motor on Dave's Aermacchi, but his precision and smoothness enabled him to repeatedly pass me. Sure, the sophisticated, linked system adds $1000 to the price tag and 20-plus pounds, but it's worth every penny and ounce to have optimum braking performance at all times. With a natural lever feel and none of the bizarre pulsing exhibited by some other makers' ABS, Honda's system is so un-invasive that you'll never know it's there until you need it. Grab a handful of brake on a wet or dirty road, and you're rewarded with complete composure and smooth deceleration. Honda's C-ABS offers controlled braking at the threshold of wheel lockup-something even expert-level riders are hard-pressed to match, and only after several attempts on dry pavement. While Indian resisted the temptation to tread too closely in the path of tradition by reverting to the hallowed 42-degree cylinder angle of vintage Tomahawk engines, today's Power Plus 105 motor has its Magneti Marelli EFI's single 52mm throttle body mounted on the left--same as the Indians of yore, and the opposite of the older Harley Evolution 45-degree V-twin motor, which it otherwise resembles. There's a single injector per cylinder, and a separate lambda probe oxygen sensor in each exhaust header, so the EFI effectively treats the twin as two singles. The bright, double-skinned, stainless steel, 2-into-1 exhaust system has chrome outers and a three-way catalyst in the forward part of the right-side silencer. The six-speed Baker gearbox bolts to the back of the motor, with a chain primary and Gates Kevlar/carbon belt final drive. A new one would cost a lot of money, but it's the smart thing to do. My first call was to Nathan at the Bike Shack. He had a used Metzeler I could have for free. Perfect. Alex was impressed with this display of American hospitality. We both laughed as he said "Didn't cost me nuthin'!" We thanked Nathan and headed for Bear Tooth Pass. I just kept thinking of how lucky I am and how generous other motorcyclists are. We were both lucky to be climbing the 11,000-foot Bear Tooth with blue skies, puffy clouds and freshly fallen Labor Day snow still on the ground. If you ever ride that way, take Chief Joseph Highway (296) into Cody, Wyoming. In World Superbike a four can weigh no less than 162 kg. (357 lbs.), and a twin can't tip the scales below 168 kg. (371 lbs.). The main reason behind these regulations is to limit costs, as lightweight parts often carry heavyweight prices. As it is, there's plenty of titanium and carbon-fiber on these bikes. Weight limits have changed the game when it comes to mass. Instead of reducing mass, the designers of these bikes work to place mass in the best location. The game is now mass centralization, which sounds like a simple program.
