The newswires are erupting today with the news that Nicky Hayden, AMA Superbike and MotoGP Champion, has died in Italy after a bicycle accident last week along the Adriatic coast. He was 35 years old.

An avid cyclist, Nicky was pedaling in Rimini, Italy, when he was struck by a car. He suffered severe head and chest trauma and was rushed to hospital in Cesena, where he was later joined by his family. Sadly, Nicky’s injuries were too severe to endure, and his death was announced this morning in a statement issued by the hospital.

“The medical team has verified the death of the patient Nicholas Patrick Hayden, who has been undergoing care since last Wednesday May 17 in the intensive care unit of the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena following a very serious polytrauma which occurred the same day,” the hospital report said.

Nicky was one of the most iconic racers of our time, not just in America but around the world. His death is devastating news.
