- Valentino Rossi arrives at the Indianapolis Grand Prix in tremendous form having finished on the podium 18 times in the last 20 races including eleven victories. The only races during this period where he has not finished on the podium are the wet races in France and Britain; in both races he crashed and re-started. The victory last year at Indianapolis by Rossi was his 69th in the premier-class which gave him the record of most GP wins in the premier-class with one more than Giacomo Agostini who had held the record for 32 years.
Jorge Lorenzo's third place finish last year at Indianapolis was his first wet weather podium in any Grand Prix class. Dani Pedrosa finished eighth last year at Indianapolis having his first ride on Bridgestone tyres. Indianapolis is one of just three circuits where Pedrosa has not had a MotoGP podium; the others are Misano and Phillip Island. If Colin Edwards finishes in the topfifteen at Indianapolis it will be his 20th successive points scoring finish. Thelast race at which he failed to scorepoints was in Germany last year when hecrashed. Andrea Dovizioso finished fifth lastyear at Indianapolis but was leading therace at the end of the first lap - the firsttime he had ever led a MotoGP race. Marco Melandri's crash at Brno aftercolliding with Mika Kallio was his firstnon-scoring race of the year. Alex de Angelis has scored 68 pointsfollowing the Czech Grand Prix which isfive more than he attained in the wholeof last season. Toni Elias's third place finish at Brnowas his first podium since third at Misanolast year. Nicky Hayden's second place finishlast year at Indianapolis is the best resulthe has achieved since his world championshipwinning year of 2006. - As the 250cc race last year at Indianapoliswas cancelled due to adverseweather conditions the winner of thisyear's race will go into the record booksas the only rider to win a 250cc GP atIndianapolis before the move to Moto2class for 2010.
Marco Simoncelli qualified on pole forthe cancelled 250cc race at Indianapolislast year. Simoncelli has finished on thepodium eighteen times in the last twentyoneraces he has finished in the points,starting at the Portuguese Grand Prix lastyear. Having won at the Czech Grand Prix,Marco Simoncelli will be aiming to bethe first rider this year to take back-tobackwins in the 250cc class. Hiroshi Aoyama, Hector Barbera andRaffaele de Rosa have all scored pointsin every race so far in 2009. - Nicolas Terol's victory at the CzechGrand Prix was the second win of his GPcareer - his first was at the IndianapolisGrand Prix last year.
Andrea Iannone's third place at theCzech Grand Prix was the fifth time hehas appeared on a Grand Prix podium;however it is the first time he has been ona podium and not stood on the top step. If any Aprilia rider finishes either first orsecond at the Indianapolis Grand Prix, itwill give Aprilia their ninth constructorstitle in the 125cc class.
