Dirty Job: Nicky Hayden Returns to his Roots

By Aaron Frank, Photography by Andrea Wilson

Saturday night at the Indiana State Fairgrounds is the best place for star-spotting during the Indianapolis MotoGP weekend. Last year's highlight was Kenny Roberts lapping his legendary Yamaha TZ750 flat-tracker. This year, American MotoGP hero Nicky Hayden, the Lucas Oil Indy Mile Grand Marshall, made the scene. Not content with waving from the starting line, the six-time AMA Grand National race-winner donned a steel shoe and did hot laps aboard the Lloyd Brothers Ducati ridden to victory earlier this season by Joe Kopp. Exiting the paddock on one wheel and slewing sideways out of every corner, Hayden showed his dirt-track skills remain intact-fueling further speculation that he'll someday return to cap that elusive "Grand Slam."
