Agostini : “If Marquez equals me, he deserves it!”

What GP fans say about the Marquez domination ranges from epic to meh… But if you think a winner like MM93 is 'boring,' let a 15-time champion put it into perspective.

With a list of perfect podium finishes that continues to stack higher and higher, and a qualifying record that is almost as flawless, MotoGP sensation Marc Marquez generates social commentary ranging from the pumped-up cheers resonating in the #93 fan section to all-out disparaging remarks from those who are growing weary of seeing that Repsol Honda cross the finish line so far ahead of the rest, race after race. We love to see how followers of the sport feel about the effect of class domination but when something so good begins to turn some fans away from watching the premiere class of motorcycle road racing, perhaps it’s time for some perspective on the subject from somebody who’s legendary GP accomplishments stand to be bettered by the 21-year-old Marquez.

We absolutely love our social (mainly Facebook) family’s feedback on everything from the latest new bike to some outrageous wide-tire custom that catches our attention. Facebook is all about sharing these events and speaking out on how we feel about them. But when we see that core enthusiasts of a sport like GP racing are yawning (either literally or via FB smiley), then we have to point out that there are so many aspects to all forms of competition, and while we may be seeing the same Repsol Honda cross the finish line, this sport is far from boring.
Legendary 15-time champion Giacomo “Ago” Agostini

Giacomo Agostini, the 15-time World Champion whose record of winning the opening 10 races of a premiere class season was equaled at the 2014 Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, spoke out in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport and we can think of no one better qualified to dispute what he says.

“Put Rossi on that Honda and he’d be winning too!” or "Let’s see Marquez on a Ducati!” These and similar comments have some merit, but keep in mind that Repsol Honda has two machines campaigned by two very skillful riders. Only one is dominating.

Just prior to Marquez matching his achievement this weekend at Indianapolis, Agostini said, “Marquez is a guy who uses his head and he has always been strong at Indy. If he wins on Sunday and equals my record he deserves it. Everything he’s won he’s deserved to win.”

We recently polled our Facebook audience on the chances of Marquez to remain undefeated throughout 2014. Agostini addressed this same question as well, saying,, “I think he is capable of winning every race. It would be an incredible record, not just for him but also for the manufacturer, because if the bike doesn’t get you to the finish line the rest is pointless.”

What does a reigning MotoGP champ and 2013 Motorcyclist Of The Year winner do when not suited up? Watching some Indy Mile dirt track competition, of course.
