Equally strong protection is offered by the skid plate. The anodized aluminum is a sturdy 3/16 inch (4.75 mm) thick, and features a corrugated bottom pan that adds extra strength to the entire piece. The upper flange extends further than others on the market, covering the oil filter, heat exchanger, and header pipe without giving up ground clearance. The plate installs with completely protected OEM fasteners and an included 3/16 inch stainless steel bracket, which prevents swiveling and potential shearing of the rubber OEM mounts.

The AltRider system for the F 800 GS was announced on the company's website, but was scheduled for an official debut during the 2010 BMW MOA International Rally in Redmond, Oregon (July 15-18, 2010). Unlike a typical product unveiling, however, the crash bars and skid plate won't just sit in a tidy display - they will be put to the test immediately. The AltRider team joined forces with Giant Loop to organize a rugged ride with other rally attendees through the Oregon desert, along the edges of the Deschutes Canyon, and through a river crossing. The stainless bars and sturdy skid plate will take hits from rocks and debris, but riders will be able to see firsthand how well the parts defend the vulnerable belly of the bike.After returning to the rally site, the AltRider F 800 GS will be on display, along with the R 1200 GS and its installed AltRider protection.
