AltRider Debuts Protection for the BMW F 800 GS

(JULY 8, 2010) - SEATTLE, WA - For three years, the BMW F 800 GS has enjoyed popularity and devotion as a motorcycle truly capable in both on and off road situations. Combining comfort and rugged terrain abilities, this bike is well equipped to tackle long-distance rides or gnarly single track adventures in the wilderness. Despite a large and loyal F 800 GS following, few suppliers have provided the extensive protection suited to the bike's varied needs. AltRider stepped into the gap and created Crash Bars and a Skid Plate that work together to keep the F 800 GS safe wherever it goes.

The crash bars are made with AltRider's signature 1 inch (25 mm) stainless steel tubing and hand TIG welding, and come in a shot peen satin finish or black powder coat finish. They use precision-manufactured mounts that fit into the existing motor mount, creating a robust connection secured by OEM fasteners on the top engine mounts. Torx fasteners are provided for the lower mounts, while the bars wrap protectively around the engine, radiator, and front fairings.

Equally strong protection is offered by the skid plate. The anodized aluminum is a sturdy 3/16 inch (4.75 mm) thick, and features a corrugated bottom pan that adds extra strength to the entire piece. The upper flange extends further than others on the market, covering the oil filter, heat exchanger, and header pipe without giving up ground clearance. The plate installs with completely protected OEM fasteners and an included 3/16 inch stainless steel bracket, which prevents swiveling and potential shearing of the rubber OEM mounts.

The AltRider system for the F 800 GS was announced on the company's website, but was scheduled for an official debut during the 2010 BMW MOA International Rally in Redmond, Oregon (July 15-18, 2010). Unlike a typical product unveiling, however, the crash bars and skid plate won't just sit in a tidy display - they will be put to the test immediately. The AltRider team joined forces with Giant Loop to organize a rugged ride with other rally attendees through the Oregon desert, along the edges of the Deschutes Canyon, and through a river crossing. The stainless bars and sturdy skid plate will take hits from rocks and debris, but riders will be able to see firsthand how well the parts defend the vulnerable belly of the bike. After returning to the rally site, the AltRider F 800 GS will be on display, along with the R 1200 GS and its installed AltRider protection.

Tight tolerances have become the hallmark of AltRider crash bars, no matter the bike they're designed to protect. Owners who installed AltRider protection on the F 800's big brother, the R 1200 GS, were surprised and delighted to find they'd purchased bars that could be installed easily without grinding or bending to create a solid fit. Installation was easier than expected because of those tolerances, the provided print instructions, and the video tutorials available on the company's website.

With thoughtful design, sturdy construction and beautiful finishes, the AltRider crash bar and skid plate combo finally provides a sound protection option for BMW F 800 GS owners who intend to ride their bikes in a variety of environments. The crash bars, available in a shot peen satin finish and a black anodized finish, are available for order now. The skid plate comes in both silver and black anodized finishes, and can be pre-ordered online. To find out more about AltRider, check out their website at
