TCX SS | Performance 2 Boots

TCX-formerly Oxtar-has finally completed its brand metamorphosis. Theories abound as to why the Italian company changed its name; a logo that too strongly resembled that of Alpinestars is the leading suggestion. Fortunately, the quality of its boots hasn't changed one iota.

TCX manufactures a full line of moto-oriented footwear, including off-road and street models in paddock, women's, touring and racing styles. We got a pair of its SS Performance 2s, which lie a notch below the top-of-the-line Competizione racing boots.

The Performance 2s feature synthetic leather uppers, Air Tech breathable liners, polyurethane shin plates and heel protectors, oil- and gas-resistant soles, mesh air vents in the ankle protectors and polyurethane toe sliders. Polyurethane isn't the most durable material for toe sliders, so if you spend a great deal of time at the racetrack you may want to go with the company's full-on racing boots.

These boots offer all the protection you need for everyday street/sport riding, yet are very lightweight and comfortable, even when walking around. You hardly notice you're wearing them, as opposed to other makers' heavier offerings festooned with numerous bells and whistles that can make walking an awkward affair. The Performance 2s are easy on/off, with zippers on the inner calves and Velcro flaps completing the secure closure. Vents and perforations in the uppers flow a moderate amount of cooling air. A waterproof version is available for those who live in wetter climes. One caveat: They run a tad large. A pair of insoles help here.

If high-performance street-riding boots are on your shopping list, these are a solid choice.
