Many of today's sportbikes come with integrated lap timers. And while these are great for getting a general idea of how fast you're lapping a circuit, they have some inherent problems. First, they tend to be tedious to operate, with difficult-to-navigate software and a tiny, ill-placed button on the handlebar. Second, they're only as accurate and honest as the person pressing the switch.

XT Racing's Ultra Lap Timer eliminates those variables and simplifies the procedure. The $244 kit includes everything a track-day fiend needs: transmitter, receiver and simple instructions. The receiver is a mere .7-inch thick and made from billet aluminum, so you know it'll withstand anything the deepest gravel trap can dish out. The digital readout is easy to see and the controls are simple and consistent. Even if the track you're riding has a transmitter, you'll still want to use the XT's beacon, as it supplies valuable information such as ambient temperature, date and track name.

Despite its small size, the receiver has a powerful memory and can store up to 2000 laps, which unless you're endurance racing is pretty much a full season. But what's most appealing is its versatility--it can act as your electronic coach with a myriad of helpful features, or you can just turn it on at the beginning of the day and use it as a lap timer. It'll even go into sleep mode between sessions to conserve power.

And wouldn't you know it? We were a few fractions of a second slower using the XT than we were with the OE timer. Nothing like technology to keep you honest...
