We've yet to find a motorcycle-specific iPod remote, but Scosche's wireless RF (that's radio frequency, as opposed to infrared, like a TV remote) car kit does the job nicely. The compact system comes with a steering-wheel cradle and Velcro strap that allow it to be mounted to tubular handlebars or the reservoir perch on sportbikes. We've tried it on a half-dozen bikes and have always found a satisfactory place to strap it.
Scosche's setup offers function and convenience. The remote lets you track forward and back, pause, adjust volume, activate shuffle, create a playlist and even put your iPod to sleep if you're tired of rockin' while you roll. We appreciated being able to silence our tunes when we entered an urban area and needed all of our senses.
The RF signal successfully transmits its commands through layers of leather, nylon and padding, working flawlessly in a jacket pocket as well as a tank bag. The remote is weather-resistant and runs on a watch-style battery that is still going strong after several months of use. The large, well-spaced buttons are easy to push with gloved fingers, and a nifty LED command indicator confirms you've made a selection. The receiving portion of the system is a tiny rectangular device that plugs into the bottom of the iPod. Although it pulls its power from the iPod's battery, it doesn't seem to draw enough juice to reduce run time significantly.
