Against all odds, and with a lot of help from friends, the Editor finds out just how competitive--and how much fun--vintage roadracing really is.

If not for these dedicated souls (some of whom pulled all-nighters to get the Drixton racer ready), I'd have never made the 500 Premier event (main photo). From left, Jack Seaver, Jake Carlton, yours truly, Todd Henning, Patrick Bodden and Dan Blake. Not pictured: Dan Russell, Dan Shoemaker, Cindy Epsaro, Douglas Fredrick and Ann Sederna.

In addition to the 500 Premier effort, I also ran Seaver's gorgeous 350 Honda (middle inset) in AHRMA's 500 Sportsman event. After going from 20th to second in three laps without a lap of practice, I blew up the motor by over-revving it after the tachometer went south.

The heart of the Drixton 450 Honda racer is a highly modified, Todd Henning-built DOHC twin, which pumps out over 60 rear-wheel horsepower thanks to, in part, extensive port work, a four-plug head, 36mm Mikunis and a handmade exhaust. The motor was surprisingly powerful and easy to use.

Multi-time AMA/CCS national champion and vintage specialist Todd Henning supplied the frame kit and built the engine for our Daytona project. Henning took his personal Drixton racer to victory in the 500 Premier event, beating Barber Racing's Chuck Huneycutt to the flag by a wheel--Henning's second consecutive 500 Premier victory at Daytona.

Things got tight late in the race. After starting on row 12 (about 48th), I caught G50-mounted Chuck Huneycutt (82), who was second behind Henning at the time, on lap six with this inside move around a lapper in turn four. Huneycutt got back by me a lap later on the back straight, setting up an epic, last-lap dash for the checkered flag.

Last lap, with only turn five, the chicane and the front straight to go. I've just re-passed Huneycutt, again with an inside move in turn four. At the exit, we dragrace toward turn five, with race-leader Henning just 20 feet in front of us, and a lapper sandwiched in between. I remember thinking, "There's no way in hell he's gonna outbrake me to turn five...."

Turn five, last lap, the Moment of Truth: Huneycutt didn't back off (as I'd expected), and we ripped into turn five (which leads out onto the banking) side by side, both bikes sliding and chattering (check the alignment of the Drixton's wheels). The only problem was that I was on the outside, which would allow Huneycutt to push me right to the edge of the track and onto the grass...

...which he did, expertly, just as I would've done if I were him. I made it back to the safety of the asphalt after a bit of 60-mph flattracking, though by then Huneycutt and Henning were gone, dragracing to the finish. It would've been so close.

Henning's 500 Premier win aboard his personal Drixton was his 20th victory at Daytona. He also won the 350 Sportman division, and garnered second in Formula 500.

Despite somewhat underdamped suspension (due to lack of set-up time), the Drixton was fast and flickable, though the rapid pace it allowed had me flattracking routinely.

Henning had a substantial lead at the halfway point, though lapped traffic slowed his pace enough to allow Huneycutt and yours truly (background) to close at the end.

Three months of work and four solid days (and nights) of thrashing and it all came down to this: a largely unknown motorcycle and a starting slot at the back of the pack. Bodden and Boehm grid the Drixton.
