Gobert and the boys have a chuckle over the computer-generated graphs. Boehm looks on with concealed horror, ego crushed. For this exercise, we used but a portion of Yamaha's extensive data-acquisition hardware to help pinpoint where Gobert is fast (and Boehm is not). Data acquisition uses a small, bike-mounted computer that receives inputs from various sensors, including wheel speed (front and rear), engine speed, throttle position and suspension movement; during racebike development, teams use many additional sensors. The data are downloaded to a trackside laptop or radioed to Uranus.

He's a new man with the same old speed. Gobert has his hair combed and his act together for 2001, and with the formidable backing of Yamaha is expected to do big things. For starters he whipped The Butcher into shape, then went on to a double 600/Superbike win at Sears Point.
