2016 Can-Am Spyder F3 Lineup | FIRST LOOK

Three wheels, two bags, more versatility for Can-Am’s trike.

Can-Am rolled out its F3 platform in 2015, featuring a low-slung stance, cruiser egos, and aggressively styled yet-minimal bodywork that had more two-wheels-only riders doing a double take at the two-wheels-forward segment of the trike world. Throwing more fuel into that growing fire for 2016, Can-Am adds two bagger versions with the unveiling of the Spyder F3-T and F3 Limited models, along with the F3-S and a limited quantity of sinister-looking triple-black F3-S Special Series models.

Going bagger with a Spyder F3 is the result of Can-Am market research that says 33 percent of North American motorcyclists fall into the cruisers-with-saddlebags demographic. The added practicality of standard hard bags is hard to ignore, that’s true, but even those who prefer a non-bagged Spyder F3 will get something for 2016 in the form of updated color options, a new “Coast to Coast” (read that generously padded) seat, and a Chopped Rear Fender option (for the F3 and F3-S) that will give a clear view of the Spyder’s 50-series rear tire. Spyder ST and RS models get updated color options for 2016 while the RT gets new colors plus a standard USB port and a Garmin 660 GPS on the RT Limited edition.

The Spyder powertrains are a carryover from 2015 with the F3 and RT Spyders getting the liquid-cooled, 1,330cc Rotax triple with a claimed 115 hp and 96 pound-feet of torque while the RS and ST-S models coming with the more traditional 998cc V-twin. Two transmissions are available for the Spyder depending on model. Transmission options for the F3, RT and RS-S include the 6-speed manual or SE6 semi-automatic, both with reverse. The RS and ST-S come with a 6-speed manual only.

Spyder pricing for 2016 starts at $14,999 for the RS, while the base F3 MSRP is unchanged from last year at $19,499 and runs all the way up to $27,249 for the new F3-S Special Triple Black Series (available in limited quantity and with the SE6 transmission only). The Spyder ST-S sport-touring model starts at $22,399 while the Spyder RT going for $23,349.
