Yamahaulin': 2200 Miles on a Motorcycle in 44 Hours

In 2200 miles and 44 hours on a used—and reasonably cheap—Yamaha YZF-R1 motorcycle we put the "Sore" in the Iron Butt Association's SaddleSore 2000. By Aaron P. Frank

The R1, loaded for bear, rolling out of Brad Banister's garage at 6 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Smiles were short-lived--seconds after the shot was snapped, we realized the battery was dead and my first Iron Butt attempt would begin under human power, with Bad Brad pushing me down the street in his slippers!

Howdy there, pardner: a big buddy in Jean, Nevada.

Winning back my gas money at a convenience-store casino in Jean, Nevada. Five minutes of hot slot action and I was $11 up—enough for gas and a celebratory microwave gut-bomb burrito!

Photo op at the top of The Strip in Sin City. Vegas marked the only real meal of the entire trip, the obligatory $2.95 AYCE buffet at the Frontier.

If you're traveling I-70 on a sportbike, don't miss Exit 26 in Joseph, Utah, the only fuel for 75 miles either way. I came just inches from having to push my bike into Draper Shell, running dry right at the top of the exit ramp. Gorgeous scenery, wide-open roads and virtually no traffic makes I-70 through central Utah's Fishlake National Forest big fun on a fast bike.

Who says the R1 isn't a good all-arounder? Here we take a little dirt-road detour across the Mojave after a bungled gas stop outside of Yermo, California.

My body stayed locked in this position for days following the ride. Although reasonably comfortable for a sportbike, the R1's 18-hour-day ergos are not what I'd call "overly plush."

What's the hold up? Get on already and go! Unlike myself, the relentless R1 never needed a rest.

Back in Madison at last! I rode a total distance of 2202.7 miles in just 36.5 hours—an average speed of 60.34 mph, including all gas stops and other breaks. Supersport touring all the way!
