My first experience on a bike was when I was 9; it was a little 110cc Chinese thing. After that I got a Yamaha PW80, and then I raced a Kawasaki KX65. The Kawi had a smaller engine, but it was a two-stroke with a six-speed manual transmission and better suspension, so it was faster and a lot more fun to ride. The next bike I got was a KX85, and I won a [motocross] championship at Racetown 395 on that. Unfortunately, I crashed it pretty bad and my doctor said I had to take a break.
"Once I got better, I started doing track days with my dad. That was in the fall of '08, and in January of '09 I had my very first roadrace. I'm 14 now and I've ridden my Suzuki SV650 to two WERA West Championships. I'm also racing an '08 GSX-R600, which is really my main focus. We bought it from the guys at Trackoholics. I'm running it in the Superstock class so we're not allowed to modify the engine, but it's got a Hindle exhaust, Dynojet Power Commander and quick-shifter. That Hindle pipe is really loud, which I like, because on the track the other riders know I'm coming. It's like a mental thing!
"It also has a remote adjuster for the front brakes, which comes in handy when they start to fade midway through a race. For suspension, we had Race Tech put 25mm cartridges in the fork and they hooked us up with their new G3S shock. They said that came from one of last year's AMA Supersport racers, so we know it's good.
"I love my bike! It's so thrilling to ride and it's been a big motivation in my life. It's like, if I don't do my homework, then I can't race. I've learned to apply that racing focus to my schoolwork and it's paid off. I currently have a 4.0 GPA. At first, none of my schoolmates believed me when I told them what I did on the weekends. But once I showed up in my local newspaper, they sure believed me!
"My goal is to race with the AMA, but I still have two more years before I'm eligible. I'd like to do a few years racing Supersport and then who knows, maybe run a Superbike? I've ridden my dad's ZX-10R a lot and I really like the power. I'm all about setting high goals."
