The Aussie-built Vee Two Super Squalo looks like a Ducati Monster on acid, sounds like an angry tea kettle and, as soon as you crack the throttle, reveals itself as perhaps the most intoxicating street-legal motorcycle ever. Essentially a Ducati 999S draped in streetfighter bodywork and fitted with a supercharger that boosts output beyond 200 horsepower, the Super Squalo is likely the fastest-accelerating customer streetbike on Planet Earth-faster even than the factory 999 Superbike racer!
A supercharged interpretation of the Vee Two Squalo (squalo means shark in Italian) was a no-brainer after Australian Automotive Components, the largest manufacturer of superchargers in the Southern Hemisphere, purchased the renowned Ducati tuning specialists Vee Two in the winter of 2005. The Super Squalo uses the engine and chassis of a Ducati 999S, complete with Brembo radial brakes, fully adjustable hlins suspension front and rear, plus forged-aluminum Marchesini wheels, the rear bolted to a special Vee Two single-sided swingarm fabricated from steel tubing.
The 999S engine is left as-is except for the mechanically driven, helical-screw-type Sprintex supercharger. The blower is the lightest and most compact on the market (small enough to fit under the stock gas tank), and is governed via the ECU to vary boost according to throttle opening, rpm and road speed to enhance both torque and top-end performance without impacting overall reliability.
A single, 60mm Vee Two-manufactured throttle body supplies air/fuel mix to the supercharger, where it is compressed to 8 psi and fed into the plenum. Past the plenum there are two more butterflies-one in the inlet tract of each cylinder-with two injectors each, staged to operate sequentially. A single injector squirts fuel until boost rises sufficiently to require more gas, at which point the MoTeC ECU enables the second injector. This clever system ensures smooth running and responsive throttle pick-up to enhance rideability off-boost, and also provides maximum performance when the throttle is screwed on.
The result: a massive 204 bhp at 9500 rpm and 124 lb.-ft. of torque at 5300 rpm. The stock Ducati chassis can handle these huge reserves of extra performance, as you'd expect from a World Superbike title-winning package. Just be careful not to dial up too much acceleration while leaned hard over in a turn. Better to use the flat-set clip-ons to lever the Super Squalo up a little before winding it open.
Can any streetbike be worth $45,000? Consider that Ducati sold all 1500 of its $72,500 Demosedici RRs, and the Vee Two Super Squalo costs $27,500 less! Morever, the Aussie-built streetfighter is not only rarer, but has comparable real-world performance and much greater practicality. Almost makes sense now, doesn't it?
