Roberts Chronicles: 1978 Europe or Bust

By Kenny Roberts

Here I am posing for a publicity photo at Daytona aboard our Yamaha TZ750 right before leaving for Europe and my first full season of Grand Prix racing. Duct tape remained the preferred choice for knee dragging.

Sometimes racers are asked to do strange things. But when it's for a sponsor like Goodyear, it's hard to say no. So here I am, standing inside a stack of slicks. Some are used and marked with reference numbers identifying the bike, the track, the number of laps, etc., so the tire--or a slice of it--could be sent back to the factory for analysis. Top: My first 500cc world championship medal.

Here's Kel adjusting the needles--a finicky job--on the Lectron carbs on our TZ750. The Lectrons, as well as the Morris wheels and Goodyear tires we used, were U.S.-made.

Here I am at Spa-Francorchamps in the wet on the 250. Although my first-ever GP win came on a 250, we gave up on them partway through the '78 season because they were too unreliable, we had limited resources and the Yamaha 250s were no match for the Kawasakis of Kork Ballington and Greg Hansford.

Talking with F750 great Patrick Pons on the podium at the Spanish GP at Jarama, Spain. Pons--le petit prince, as his countrymen called him--was France's first world roadracing champ and a big hero there, winning the Formula 750 title in '79. He also won the Daytona 200 in '80, but died tragically at Silverstone the same year.

Not sure about this one--I think I'm telling World Champion Barry Sheene how to ride two-strokes...or maybe that a dirttracker from the U.S. might know something about how to ride a 500.

That's me on the 500 at Jarama.
