As certified velocity junkies, most of us would probably donate a kidney to dance with Nicky Hayden's AMA Superbike Champion Honda RC51, or bounce Michael Andretti's 900-horsepower, 245-mph Champ Car over a few curbs.

Formula-car phenom Michael Andretti took a while to get used to Nicky Hayden's firmly suspended, backward-shifting, 180-horsepower factory RC51 Superbike; his not-yet-broken-in leathers and boots--and car-spec helmet--didn't help, though Andretti did borrow Hayden's Arai for one session. Above, right: Hayden and Andretti took turns prepping each other for their stints. Hayden found the Lola's cockpit seriously constricting; in a car with 900 horsepower and more than three Gs of lateral force on tap, it needs to be.

Andretti gets down to business in a later session. Hayden Crew Chief Ray Plumb said Hayden's RC51 was set up just as Hayden races it: full power, no detuning. (Wonder if Andretti knew that going in?) Fifteen large gets you a basic, race-prepped RC51 (not far from stock, in other words). For approximately $100,000 ($107,999 to be exact) you can get an RC51 much like Hayden's (and Colin Edwards's)--a real-deal Superbike that pumps out 170 horsepower and scales in at roughly 375 pounds. Hayden's bike is only a tick tricker. (But then you've got to ride it....)

Hayden acclimated reasonably quickly to the stiff Lola/Honda, which produces enough downforce at speed to run upside down. A carbon-fiber Lola chassis costs a cool $450,000. And you can't even buy the Honda motor in back; Honda leases them. They come to the races in big aluminum boxes, and when they're used up after 500 miles or so they go back to Honda. The bill at season's end? Two to three million bucks.

Quick question: Which racing machine needs more tending? (Just kidding....) As complex and sensitive as a current-spec Superbike can be, the level of hand-holding and general futzing required by a Champ Car is far higher; it takes a small army, for instance, just to fire the thing up. And we won't even bring up the cash requirements.... Major thanks, by the way, to all the Team Honda/Motorola/Mid-Ohio folks who helped make our day--and this story--possible.
